I am looking for layout ideas and would like to know which sites you consider to be the most reader friendly or visually appealing that are primarily focused on text-based content such as news, articles, stories, etc.

I am NOT looking for sites with heavy flash, graphics, images, artwork, etc. based layouts nor am I looking for sites where you like the content but do not like the site's layout.

If the sites you want to list violate the forum guidelines, feel free to PM them to me.

www.fark.com

Too many adverts but overall I like the simplicity of the site.

You got a a link to the article in question on the left side, a mostly exaggerated humorous mini explanation about what the subject is about and to the right of that you have a link to the section to discuss said article/topic.

Links/discussions are also broke down by the topic...all links/threads, entertainment, videos, politics and so on.

Simple and it works.

Coolhunting is heavily image-based, but the the persistent drop-down header once you scroll down below the fold is both cool and useful.

I scan the Slashdot headlines, but don't participate much in the discussions as there are way to many idiot kids, extreme egos that belong to absolute morons, and finally it's loaded with trolls.

Linux Journal's website sometimes too.

My favorite content actually comes from a news letter though. (Python Weekly)

Beyond that, I check out h-online sometimes and Groklaw when updates about technology company law suits coome out.

Content based I like the format that Twitchy.com uses. I know it is based around the Twitter feeds but they group their information by subjects, then you see the tweets they are talking about then links to articles that they are referring to.

It's also easy to see what is the top news of the moment at a quick glance.

I favor function over form, so I prefer a more stripped down style (or maybe no style?). news.ycombinator.com and reddit.com/r/programming are my mainstays outside of this forum.

I use getprismatic.com a lot, mostly because of the way it surfaces content, but the design is also very minimalistic and good, IMO. I have two invites for prismatic if anyone wants one. You kind of need to be active on twitter to make the service really useful, though.

This is my preference as well. I'm a huge fan of simple layouts because then tend to make a site much faster in terms of browser page rendering time and also because it makes content much easier to read.

not really content based but most of the websites that shopify churns out are both visually appealing and are easy to use
