What do you think about the Sam Williams pick

Love it. Zero chance he would make it till 88 so I’m okay taking him at 56. I trust DQ to get the best out of him.

That's what it really comes down to for me.

I feel more comfortable "reaching" for him (though I think his value was fine there) at that point in the 2nd round than I would risk losing him trying to wait until the 3rd/88th pick.

And to the last point, I trust Quinn getting the most out of him.

Pass rushers sometimes you have to be aggressive. Waiting until the 3rd or 4th is how you get Chauncey Golstons and Dorance Armstrongs. Not that either player is bad, but if you want a catalyst you may need to be aggressive.

Instead of trading up for Lawrence in 2014, we could have stayed and taken Koney Elay. We would up with Elay eventually anyways after he washed out with a couple teams

Of course, I bring it up b/c we have a history of drafting players with off the field questions early and a majority of the time it has not worked out.

There's no real correlation between off field behavior and on-field performance.
It's just a distraction used by the moral hierarchy.

He is anti tackling RB. He will be a situational rusher. 3rd and long specialist untill he figures out how to play run support too.

Most times I end up liking a player, after initially not liking a pick. It's the opposite with Williams. I love the athletic skill and production, but he's pretty raw, and a lot of his sacks came after the QB ran around for a bit. He doesn't appear to have any moves beyond his speed.

I still like the pick, because we needed a pass rusher, and I assume they believe Williams can turn into a full time DE in time, and contribute as an edge rusher early. But now I fear he may not be as impactful year one as we hope/want/need. A little concerned about immediate impact from our first two picks, who are both so raw

I think he has a great first step / closing speed and good enough bend but his technique is going to need some work.

I think there’s a correlation between off the field issues and decision making.

I also think decision making is important for how successful a prospect will be.

Shame there's as many players that disprove that viewpoint as support it.

Yep and as with Smith, we are adamant that our board's correct. As we've been told this is a crapshoot draft and like the way we are firm on our assessments.

yes, I like the fact that they’re sticking to their process and board (as far as we can tell). I feel like the process got discarded too often when Marinelli was here (yes, I’m speculating but it always seemed to be for guys he wanted).

For what it’s worth, Football Outsiders has a system for evaluating pass-rush prospects (SACKSeer). That system despised Taco. It seriously loves Williams.

Yep. We lost our fastest pass rusher and replaced him with an even faster one. He and Micah are going to be flying around the formation.

yeh he is faster (40 time wise) and bigger than even both Gregory and Robert Quinn ..helluva size/speed specimen who produced big in college level .
If he brings similuar fantastic first step get off as Quinn/Gregory did, that would be great addition to our defense.

The sexual battery ordeal (which was dropped) and one dimensional poor defense rap likely dropped him down a full round.
But his measurements and college productivity and potential are just too off the charts to pass up.

I'm very happy and intrigued with this pick !

So, backing out the sacks, Williams had 10 career TFLs in the run game. Not bad for a guy being asked to play 34 DE at 260 lbs. This is supposed to be a big weakness in his game, but compare those numbers to a guy like Ojabo, who really does give you nothing in the run game. My guess is if you put this guy in the right alignments he'll be a game wrecker both in the pass and the run game.

All the armchair analysts decrying SW run stopping concerns fail to even realize that he played and had his success (12+ SACKS) as a DE in 3-4 system.

3-4 DE's are typically 300 lbs and 2 gapping.

SW is not a 5 tech he would be weaponized as 9 tech or even as a standard 4-3 one gap DE.

CONTEXT MATTERS.
