A Mac is a viable choice. You will pay more, and have to deal with the particular peculiarities of their systems. You can get extended warranties, and if an Applecare store is close by, that can be pretty easy. They can still get viruses, there are just fewer of them targetted toward the Mac.

You can also do things like get a business Dell and get their upgraded, extended warrenty. I have a friend who bought a high end laptop from them years ago, and has had the computer replaced once, and the screen replaced 4 times, all under warranty. The business support is better.

Otherwise, on anti virus, many of the hardcore tech guys I know who use professional AV software seem to prefer Kaspersky. I use Avira AntiVir because it's free.

Kaspersky is my favorite antivirus program.

Get a Mac if you want less of a chance of getting viruses. It's not impossible to get viruses on Macs like many believe but the chances are less likely.

If you want to stick with Windows, get a Toshiba (for a laptop). If you want a desktop, I'd go with Asus.

Definitely go with Windows 7 too if you stick with Windows.

And for the browser, Google Chrome is by far the best.

If you want a total virus free computer stop using Microsoft products.
for those coming from Microsoft windows environment I would suggest:
1- Linux Mint it comes with all kind of software. ( also you can run many Windows software using Wine or one of the many virtualization tools such as VMWare)
2 or Try PCBSD

Desktop or Laptop?

For a desktop if you don't know anything at all about computers get a Mac, if you do know about computers build one that will demolish a Mac for half the price with a 22'' LCD. It's worth it.

For a laptop I'd just search for deals. Slickdeals.net has deals a lot, I used to like Dell until they started outsourcing their PC support.

Virus protection, I've always used free software but I'm pretty computer savvy. Free Kapersky, Microsoft Security Essentials, Combofix, Malware Bytes, and Advanced System Care with Smart Defrag has kept my computer clean for over 5 years with no restore. I've been know to download music and visit an untrustworthy site on occasion :laugh1:

Before you buy a Mac, makes sure everything you use your computer for is compatible. If you just email and web surf, you should be okay.

All you need is a simple antivirus program like AVG and you should never get a virus, ever. I've been building my own windows based PCs for close to 15 years, and I look at copious amounts of porn and I have never gotten a virus. :laugh1:

I always advocate spending $900 or so and build a custom top of the line PC. It'll be a lot better than those "name brand" PCs.

$900 custom i7 pc VS $2500 comparable i7 mac.

You can get a $1100 macbook but it only has a core 2 duo and a 13" screen.

I like macs (use one for work) but man, so much more $$ for what you actually get :/

Go to cnet.com ,there are free downloads to clean up and speed up your pc as good as new. Get revo uninstaller and ccleaner .I used Avast antivirus for years but now use Microsoft Security Essentials and have had no problems for a year or more. Read the menu at the left side of the site to see what else you can use.
But like you I am looking to get a new computer and have been looking at Tiger Direct.com,you can get parts and put it together or buy a ready made, depends if you want to game online or watch tv online or just read and post on Cowboys Zone.
Oh yeah, we have switched to Firefox for the browser and have no complaints.
Good luck. Come back and tell how you did.

I love my iMac.

Never had ANY problems.

I wouldn't go Dell at all. Dell will never get another dollar from me.
