This is a tough question because there were times last year when neither side was reliable. But I would have to say defense, even though they struggled to get off the field when they did not get turnovers. The offense was too inconsistent. Too many drives ended because of penalties and the running game basically disappeared.

For 2022.....i believe the defense is gonna have to be the one to lean on and carry the team. Of the two, it is the more consistent and better coached. The offense has shown to be erratic at times, undisciplined and the coaches have been outcoached. Do not have much confidence on them to carry the team or depend on them heavily. Too predictable.

The stats say the Cowboys had the league's most dominant offense last year, but the eye test said the defense was the more consistent unit by the end of the season. Both sides of the ball have question marks after moving on from Cooper & Gregory.

When was the last time it was said, the defense is more reliable than the offense?

How things have changed with MM & Quinn.

I would have to know what the definition of “reliable” is for this discussion. Does it mean consistently good? Does it mean you can rely on it when it’s needed most?

If it means which side of the ball came up big when needed most…I can’t say either was that great. The offense was certainly reliable through 9 games or so but not so much after that. The defense could not get critical stops vs Ariz and SF when it was most needed.

For the Cowboys to be able to take that “next step” in the playoffs, both sides are going to have to be much more reliable IMO. If our defense doesn’t get the TOs like they did last year, they better be able to stop the run and make other big plays or we're back to being below avg D again. I’m hopeful but until they actually do it….hope is not a strategy.

At times I hope I win the lottery, but I don't have a good strategy if I don't buy any tickets. :muttley:

Maybe the team needs some better tickets. 1st round DT would be a good start for that.

I will.
I mean fans blame him when things don't go right, but won't give him credit for when it does.
Same goes for Jerry, and even some players as well.
Its not picking a side to me. Its how much McCarthy was actually responsible for the defensive performance in 2021. He isnt a playcaller on either side of the ball right now, so I wouldn't credit nor blame him for one sides strength nor weakness. His role here is as a team manager, so I judge on the final product of the team. To me the strong defensive performance is on Quinn and the offensive collapse is on Moore

I'll weigh in before I read the article.

I think the offensive players are a more reliable group given the age / experience of guys like Dak, Zeke and the OL, but the OC (and I like Kellen) can't be trusted YET to be consistent and to adjust when required.

The DC is more reliable because he has experience and has found himself a comfortable place to react to what he sees. His players though are younger and can be hit or miss....eg. Diggs

Jimmy Johnson was the same. He let his coaches coach. But yet you would give Jimmy credit?

Did he coach the defense? Offense? No I give Wadnstead, Davis and Turner credit for that. I give Johnson credit for leading the team to two Super Bowls wins though

Oh, no doubt about that. Jimmy did it in his 4th year.
MM in his 3rd. But Jimmy had a much more talented team. Probably one go the best in NFL history and well coached overall.

I just don't assign credit or blame to coaches that dont coach a side of the ball for that sides success or failure. I don't see the merit in it
