The plots of many shows are driven by the fans.
Fonzie in "Happy Days" was meant to be nothing more than a bit-character when the show was conceived, but over time...
Sit on it, Winicki.

About the only show I have ever watched that completely disregards fans feelings towards cast members is GoT. TWD obviously caters to fans, because Daryl wouldn't even be what he is without them latching on to him as the favorite.
Of course! From what I've heard, Daryl was not suppose to be around long (originally).

Walking Dead' stars prove they're real-life heroes by helping car accident victims
Walking Dead stars and all-around good dudes Norman Reedus and Steven Yeun were spotted stopping on the side of the road in Peachtree City, Georgia, to help people who had been involved in a car accident Thursday.
Two witnesses who saw the accident told CBS46 in Atlanta that Reedus and Yeun rode up on their motorcycles when they saw that a collision had occurred.

I heard the same. He was supposed to be a semi-main character in the likes of Tyrese, Dale or Bob. Enough to be known, but not even close to being untouchable. Basically he was intended to be in the easily expendable range of cast members until fans fell in love with him.
