Has anyone watched this show? I think it is pretty good. I do have a question though. Has anyone used Ancestry.com? I have traced my family back on my mother's side all the way back to Frank and Jesse James. On my father's side I can only go back to my great Grandfather and some sporadic relatives from that point. I have some evidence, though not conclusive that we are somehow related to Ben Franklin but not sure how.

I have been thinking about using that site and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it and is it worth the money to sign up?

My mother's side is traced back to the 1500's and came here in direct opposition to Martin Luther...

I've been doing genealogy for almost 20 years...

Ancestry.com is a good site, but just bear in mind they are taking your/others hard work and selling it to other subscribers with no compensation to you. My family history has been totally ripped off by them for profit. The very documents they are selling to you are documents that others have provided.

Oh... and when you no longer pay? They cut you off from your own hard work...

Hmmmm. What alternatives are out there in cyberspace? Can you direct me to some good resources?

Back in the day, everything was collaborative in the sense every one wanted to help...

The Mormon sites have good records (I'm not Mormon but they do keep good records)... Ancestry.com just sits back and makes money off of every one else...

I saw a document linked to one of my family members. They wanted to charge me for it... It was a document I provided to them... Shameless bunch of Charletons...

I think I heard that about the Mormons. What site do they run that would have that information?

And I feel ya on the other as well. If you provided the document you should have access to it.

What trickblue said is true, and he obviously has a lot of experience.

But I would still check out Ancestry.com, maybe they have a 1month free trial or something. I was able to find some really great stuff on there.

I tried Ancestry.com for a while and traced my mothers family back to Scotland but since my father didn't know the names of his grandparents I hit a dead end.
