Are you ready for some more football… Didn’t get enough football during yesterday’s NFL tripleheader; in-laws starting to get on your nerves. Whatever, there are a number of intriguing college games on the Thanksgiving weekend schedule before the pros kick back into action on Sunday. And it all starts with a head-to-head match-up of arguably the two top prospects for the 2008 draft.
Arkansas at LSU; 2:30 PM ET; CBS… Top-ranked LSU needs a win against Arkansas to keep its hopes of playing for the BCS title. As an added bonus, this game also features two of the very top-rated prospects for the 2008 draft in LSU DT Glenn Dorsey (#72, 6-2, 300) and Arkansas junior RB Darren McFadden (#5, 6-2, 215). Indeed, the duo could very well go 1-2 at the upcoming draft. In fact, LSU could be one of the dominant teams this coming April with a deep draft class with a number of outstanding prospects including WR Early Doucet (#9, 6-0, 205), junior DE Tyson Jackson (#93, 6-5, 292), OLB Ali Highsmith (#7, 6-0, 225), CBs Jonathan Zenon (#19, 5-11, 175) and Chevis Jackson (#21, 5-11, 195), hard-hitting SS Craig Stetz (#6-1, 205), along with veteran QB Matt Flynn (#15, 6-3, 230) and rugged RB Jacob Hester (#18, 5-11, 230). Meanwhile, the Razorbacks’ McFadden is just the senior partner in what is college football’s most dynamic RB duo which also includes fellow junior Felix Jones (#25, 5-11, 210). The Razorbacks also have a talented receiver in WR Marcus Monk (#85, 6-5, 220), while junior C Jonathan Luigs (#63, 6-3, 305) and OG Robert Felton (#61, 6-4, 330) anchor a big offensive line. On the other side of the ball, DT Marcus Harrison (#55, 6-2, 310) is a solid prospect upfront, while LB Weston Daccus (#30, 6-1, 230) and CBs Red Richardson (#9, 5-11, 200) and Michael Grant (#8, 5-11, 195) should get some late-round or free agent interest.
Texas at Texas A&M; 3:30 PM ET; ABC… LSU’s Glenn Dorsey and Sedric Ellis of Southern Cal are easily the top-rated DTs in the 2008 draft class, but there is still some sorting out to do among the second-tier players at the position. And a lot of that sorting out could take place when the Longhorns play the Aggies in their annual shoot-out as both teams have quality DTs with size in Texas’ Frank Okam (#97, 6-4, 320) and A&M’s Red Bryant (#85, 6-5, 325). Pro scouts will also be watching Aggies’ junior TE Martellus Bennett (#13, 6-6, 265) who could be one of the first players off the board at the position if, as expected, he opts to leave school early this winter. Meanwhile, rangy WR Limas Sweed (#4, 6-4, 220) could join DT Okam in the late first round mix, while speedy junior RB Jamaal Charles (#25, 6-0, 200) could also figure in that area if he leaves school this winter.
Boise State at Hawaii; 9 PM ET; ESPN2… After playing something of a patty-cake schedule all year, Hawaii, one of two remaining unbeaten D1A teams, gets a chance to make a case to get a BCS Bowl invitation when they host Boise State. The game also represents a final chance for Hawaii QB Colt Brennan (#15, 6-2, 200) to impress pro scouts against a quality opponent. Brennan, one of the most prolific passers in college football history, still has to prove that he is more than a product of the system. Brennan will be throwing to one of the country’s deeper receiver corps which includes junior WRs Davonne Bess (#7, 5-9, 195) and Ryan Grice-Mullen (#1, 5-9, 180), along with seniors Jason Rivers (#84, 6-1, 195) and C.J. Matthews (#19, 5-10, 165). The best pro prospects in this game, though, may be a pair of Boise State juniors in OT Ryan Clady (#79, 6-5, 320), an athletic LT type, and charismatic RB Ian Johnson (#41, 5-10, 210) who has battled through an injury-plagued campaign this fall.
Virginia Tech at Virginia; Noon ET; ESPN… Has any top prospect from a major BCS program gotten less attention this fall than Virginia DE Chris Long (#91, 6-4, 285), the son of former Raiders’ All-Pro Howie Long, who has quietly emerged as a top 5 prospect in his own right. Long will be tested going up against Hokies’ LT Duane Brown (#76, 6-5, 310) an athletic converted TE. In fact, Virginia Tech figures to be a major player at the 2008 draft where OLB Xavier Adibi (#11, 6-2, 225) also has the physical tools to slip into the latter part of the opening round, while MLB Vince Hall (#9, 5-11, 240) is a solid first-day prospect. The Hokies draft class also feature some decent depth including WRs Eddie Royal (#4, 5-10, 185) and Josh Morgan (#2, 6-0, 220), and DTs Carlton Powell (#99, 6-2, 295) and Barry Booker (#6-3, 285). The Hokies’ 2008 draft prospects could be even stronger if either of junior CB Brandon Flowers (#18, 5-10, 190), the latest in what seems like a never-ending line of top Tech prospects at the position, or junior RB Branden Ore (#28, 5-10, 205), opt to leave school early and turn pro this winter, while sophomore OG Sergio Render (#70, 6-2, 320) is one of the better young offensive linemen in the country. Indeed, this game features two of the better young OGs around as Virginia junior Eugene Monroe (#75, 6-5, 315).
Missouri vs Kansas at Kansas City; 8 PM ET; ABC… What I they scheduled Kansas against Missouri and a football game broke out. In fact, college football saved its best for last this weekend as unbeaten and second-ranked Kansas plays 3rd ranked Missouri on a neutral field for the Big XII North title. The winner gets a spot in next week’s conference final and a win there and they are almost assuredly off to the BCS title game in January. Kansas, of course, has been the best story in college football this season, as the former charter member of the ‘if its football season can basketball be far behind club’ has won 11 straight games. The Jayhawks are led by emerging sophomore QB Todd Reesing (#5, 5-10, 200) who has thrown 30 TD passes this fall against only 4 picks. Kansas’ best pro prospect, though, is junior CB Aqib Talib (#3, 6-1, 205), a potential late-first-round prospect if he opts to leave school early. The versatile Talib, in fact, also plays some WR on offense. The Jayhawks also have an outstanding OT in junior Anthony Collins (#78, 6-5, 310), a finalist for the Outland Trophy. Kansas also has one of college football’s most underrated backs in RB Brandon McAnderson (#35, 5-11, 235), a RB-FB hybrid who isn’t all that fast, but is tough to bring down, while WR Marcus Henry (#86, 6-3, 210) is a big-play receiver. Meanwhile, TE Derek Fine (#85, 6-3, 245), OT Cesar Rodriquez (#65, 6-6, 296) and DT James McClinton (#93, 6-1, 285) should at least get some free agent interest this spring.
The stingy Kansas defense, though, will have its hands full trying to stop a prolific Missouri offense that features perhaps the best QB in the country no has heard of as well the top 1-2 TE combination in college football. Junior QB Chase Daniel (#10, 6-0, 225) is the guy pulling the trigger, while, NFL teams looking to upgrade at TE this coming off-season will be trooping to this game to see Tigers duo of Martin Rucker (#82, 6-5, 255) and junior Chase Coffman (#45, 6-5, 245). Rucker, the younger brother of star Carolina DE Mike Rucker, is an athletic two-way TE who is having a career year, while Coffman, the son of former Packer and Chiefs’ TE Paul Coffman, is a gifted receiver in a TE’s body. Meanwhile, the Tigers have a number of other intriguing prospects for the 2008 draft including big-play WR Will Franklin (#2, 6-1, 205), RB Tony Temple (#22, 5-9, 200), rugged C Adam Spieker (#77, 6-3, 305), athletic OT Tyler Luellen (#79, 6-6, 305), and super quick DT Lorenzo Williams (#99, 6-1, 295).
