The low hanging fruit is the 92 Cowboys. But were they better than the powerhouse Cowboy teams of the seventies? Any Dallas sleeper teams that might have been the best talentwise but underperformed?

1970s team = could not beat the Steelers (0-6 in both SB and regular season).

1990s team = clearly the dominant team. Nobody was 6-0 against the 1990s Cowboys and nobody beat them in a Super Bowl.

1990s team was superior.

I think it is the '92 team. Could have easily gone 15-1. Lost a close game to LAR and the clusterf*ck of an ending at Washington. Could have, and should have won both games. Defense was ranked #1 overall (#1 against the run and #5 against the pass). Defense was so fast and caused so many turnovers. Offense, defense and ST all had big play ability at any moment. The triplets entering their prime. They outscored their opponents on average of 25.5-14.5. Average score in the playoffs was 39-16.

The '93 teams scored about 2 ppg less than the '92 team, and gave up essentially the same amount. Outscored opponents by an average of 32-17 in the playoffs.
The '95 team had the best offense, scoring 27.2 ppg, but the worst defense of the three, giving up 18.2 ppg. Outscored their opponents 32-18 in the playoffs.

The '92 team is my favorite of all time. Just a fantastic season that culminated in a curb stomping of the bills. The '93 team is a step behind them. They had the issues with Emmitt's contract and got off to an 0-2 start, played really well most of the season, the Leon Lett fumbled away the thanskgiving game, only to not lose again. The '95 team caught some breaks, IMO. I'm not sure they beat SF in the playoffs that year after the butt whipping they gave us earlier in the season. GB upsetting them was huge, as was Neil O'Donnell shrinking under the bright lights of the SuperBowl.

I’ll always hold those 70’s teams closer to my heart . For a decade and actually longer we were serious contenders with 12 championship appearances in 17 seasons . We should have won more championships but we ran up against some historically great teams as well in Green Bay and Pittsburgh.

But here’s how I’d rank our top 10 greatest teams .
1. 1993
2. 1992
3. 1977
4. 1971
5. 1994
6. 1995
Yes I think 94 team was better even though we loss
7. 1978
8. 1970
9. 1981
10. 1967

Stats show the 90's team was the best.
But, in my Cowboys heart, the Staubach/Landry led team is best for other than stats reasons.
It's personal, so I am not trying to argue this.

Sentimentally and aesthetically I think the Cowboys '92 team. And football was simply more advanced in the 90's than in the 70's.

Will say this:
-'78 team crushed everyone in their 3 playoff games, average score was Cowboys 28-8. Forced 19 turnovers.

That said, the NFL was a tougher place to play in the 70s so it maybe closer than many think.

Nice breakdown.

IT was a more brutal game in the 70's before they began to change the rules for the 78 season.

In a lot of ways you have to look at three different eras. Pre 78, 78-late 80's; then late 80's to the early 2000's.
Rule changes kept penalizing the Defense. and then of course FA and the CAP changed everything.

Overall talent the 71 team has and will have more HOF players than any other. During that season, only the Packers were no longer a top team. The Vikings were still near their peak. arguably. Some say they peaked when Tarkenton came but I say different; by the time he came the Purple People Eaters were beginning to age and the size problem they had was becoming a real factor. The Colts were still right up there. The AFC had the Chiefs, Raiders, and of course the Dolphins had arrived.

Roger at QB, Duane Thomas, Clavin Hill, Bullet Bob, Lance Alworth, Ditka, Rayfield Wright, Niland, Nye, Neely, and some backups that were pretty good in Liscio and Gregg.
The D was truly Doomsday during the playoff and humiliated the team that would go undefeated the next year in the SB.

Look at how many top 5 all time Cowboys players the 71 team from the thread earlier in the week.

If we're looking for sleepers - the 2014 team.

If not for the blown Dez call (or the stupid DeMarco fumble, really), Dallas is in the NFCCG and they beat the brakes off of the Seahawks to go to the SB.

The 1977 Cowboys get my vote as #1. They slobberknockered every opponent that postseason, after having ran a 12-2... think about that, 85%... W/L.

And oh btw, we might be talking about that 1976 team if not for the Jackie Smith drop in the endzone. Never felt worse for a player than I did at that moment. It still gives me a gag reflex as I write about it.

Those top 3 are 100% top 3.

I'd probably go 92, 93, then 77.
But they are definitely the top 3 overall.
