Why is Clock Management So Hard?

For those that didnt catch the game tonight, Harbaugh just stood there on the sideline and let about 40 seconds just burn of the clock with two timeouts in his pocket in the final minute of the game. Just a total head scratcher.

We all know McCarthy cant manage the clock worth a dam either, so I aint saying we would do much better in that situation.

But that begs the question, why is clock management so hard for these NFL head coaches? Are they too distracted? Do they not realize the clock is actually ticking? Cant they just hire a dude whose job is just to watch the clock and tell them when to call timeouts and stuff?

Yeah every fanbase complains about this. So strange that it’s such a prevalent issue.

You're just so much smarter than the NFL head coaches that you are calling bad at clock management.
Bro, the announcers were talking about it and Collisworth was saying he totally didnt understand it. I aint just making this up out of thin air.

Hey about taking part in the discussion and not acting like a dick, think you can do that?

I wasn't being sarcastic, I think you really bring up good points. But now that I'm "acting like a dick" I take it back.

What happened in the Bengals / Ravens game tonight was just plain stupid. One of the worst cases of late 4th quarter clock management that I've seen.

With all the talk about analytics these days, I can't believe every team doesn't have an analytics person assigned specifically to clock management. It's so obvious and would be the perfect thing to address with actual analytics. It's baffling, and it's widespread in both college and the pros.

I've come to the conclusion, its easier to manage the clock sitting at home watching the game on a couch. They need to be in contact with someone sitting at home watching the game. I still fume over Jason Garret giving the ball back to the Packers.

The time left in the game was not the issue for Baltimore. The issue was the 10 yard penalty that put them in a 2nd and 20 situation. They did not lose because of clock management, they lost because of a penalty. With todays NFL wou cant leave time on the clock. Absent the penalty if Baltimore would have scored there would have been less than 20 seconds left which is about all you can afford these days to leave a team that just needs a FG to win. I think he played the clock right!

Absent the penalty they would have had the ball 3rd and 6 at the Cinn 13 with 29 seconds left. Plenty of time to run 4 plays if they had converted the first down inside the 5 which is what they needed.

I was watching it at work, and could not understand it. The commentators couldn't understand it. Just agonizingly stupid. And we see this over and over again. They have around a minute left and they think their 2 timeouts are good enough. But something unforeseen happens and they end up with more timeouts than time. It's embarrassing.

I thought Mike looked like a genius from what I witnessed all day yesterday. From McDaniels, to Vikes HC, to Haurbaugh. It was awful!

glad you SEE, its not just MM , i mean some crazy play calls as well all the analytics like Staley is poster boy for makes MM look old school ..how about penalty's we blame MM for the bad run yet Parcells DC teams also highly penalized, Seattle won a SB being the highest penalized team in the liege..you see FAN Narratives often times are just wrong and highlight their teams issues because they watch every snap all year and do not realize this happens all around the league.

coaching in real time is harder than hindsight judgments.
