Why Schoonmaker at 58 is Better for Dallas than Kincaid would have been at 26

If Dallas values the run half as much as they say they do, Dalton with pick 26 would have been a bad investment. Getting a blocking TE and a round later at that, was a much better move.

No, I am not saying Luke is better than Dalton...literally nobody believes that. The value and the fit make Luke the better selection for Dallas, that's all.

Any running team relying on Dalton to block with any regularity will find themselves behind the sticks a TON. He is the real deal as a threat in the passing game...a joy to watch, and he'll beast in Buffalo I think.

Blocking D (at best)

I wouldn't include him in the running game at all at this stage.

His footwork is flawed which sets the whole block up for failure. He doesn't get into position and squared with any degree of consistency.

Shows a propensity to grab as opposed to punch when engaging defenders; afraid it may draw flags at the next level.

Has some ability blocking in space against smaller DBs but can be had by quick changes of direction.

Receiving - A

He excels in all aspects of pass catching.

Hands, Hands, Hands. Dalton is a natural hands catcher. He does a great job concentrating and reeling in passes with arms extended whether overhead, behind him or underthrown. Does a great job using his reach paired with his body to shield would be defenders and make contested catches.

Runs crisps, smooth routes. Gets into his stem and accelerates instantly. Snaps his head around on his break and is always ready for the ball. Runs a quick out that should be taught in clinics!

Between his athleticism and his never ending effort Dalton is a YAC machine! He goes over, around and through defenders. No weak tackles here.

Conclusion

In the right scheme Dalton is an absolute weapon...Buffalo you say? I'm phoning in my bet for him as OROY. In Dallas he might've been a walking flag with the way he grabs on them running plays lol.

Yeah I would have rather had Kincaid. I'm just tired of the stone age TEs. Let's evolve and give this QB a real weapon at the position. If you can't scheme around his blocking deficiencies then the problem is you.

People focus on the reach taking Schoonmaker at 58. That's true but the type of TE is just as bad as the overdraft to me.

Let’s see if M. Smith turns out to be more valuable than Kincaid or not

Certainly fair, I would be thrilled to have him, and I think he's OROY he's so good. I hope Mazi / Schoon combo pay off though.

Schottenheimer:

HOW DO YOU SEE LUKE SCHOONMAKER CONTRIBUTING? – “Really excited that we got Luke. The way it fell was great. I think when you look at him, he’s a guy that we felt could do everything. He can control the C-gap in the run game. He’s well-coached. He’s real polished in the run game because of the way he was taught at Michigan, his strength, his lower body strength, his ability to fit combinations. But you don’t realize how fast the guy is. He’s a legit 4.58 guy and I think there are some things that we’re really excited about that he can bring us from a vertical standpoint of stretching the defense vertically. Like, again, it fell to where we’re really excited to get him and feel really good. I feel really good about that entire tight end room. It’s a really good tight end room. They’ve played a lot of football last year, which is great, and I think Luke just falls right in the mix with them.”

Yeah I had Kincaid higher than Mazi but I've waited so long for his type of player that it didn't sting so much to lose Kincaid at 26.

I can't imagine a scenario where Schoonmaker is anything more than what we already have or what we have seen here for a really long time.

The Chiefs have Travis Kelce. The Eagles have Dallas Goedert. The 49ers have George Kittle. We have Luke Schoonmaker.

One of those things is doing it's own thing.

Problem is this doesn't even make Buffalo better. The only reason they haven't been productive in the playoffs is due to the liabilities at blocking and controlling the clock with a running game on both sides of the ball.

Dalton as a Bill in no way makes that team any better.

i'd rather have had notre dame te michael mayer.
purely selfish...favorite player from my favorite college team going to my cowboys.
didn't happen.
i like schoonmaker.
just not in rd2.
gonna root like hell for him.
still can't believe they actually drafted a dt in rd1.
i'm excited to watch this group play.
can't wait for the pre-season.

I like Mayer, actually cutting up some of his film now. He to me is the consumte all around TE, I can see why some had him as TE1 - mostly because Kincaid is so terrible in the run game.

I like Mayers all around game and size but honestly thought he looked a bit stiff catching the ball compared to some of the other top TEs that were drafted.

Schoonmaker is big and fast. Kincaid also has a bad back. We already have seen that in David LaFleur from years past.

Kincaid had a fracture in his back that's now fully healed and he's been cleared medically. I have no idea if that will ever be an issue again and neither do you.

So would you have preferred a tight end like Tucker Kraft?
