Where's Wheaton?
May 25, 2010|By Margaret Ramirez, Tribune reporter
Call it the big Wheaton Whoops!
NBC News Today Show anchor Ann Curry may have been speaking to graduates at Wheaton College in Massachusetts on Saturday, but her mind was in Wheaton College in Illinois.
While delivering the commencement speech at the Massachusetts's Wheaton, Curry named several distinguished alumni including Dennis Hastert, Wes Craven and the Rev. Billy Graham.
All of those figures attended the evangelical Christian college in Wheaton, Ill., — not the secular school in Norton, Mass.
Michael Graca, spokesman for Wheaton College in Massachusetts, said graduates and guests immediately noticed the error. But the crowd allowed Curry to continue her speech and even gave her a standing ovation.
"There was surprise, and she certainly caught our attention," Graca said. "On the other hand, people listened to the whole speech and generally enjoyed it."
LaTonya Taylor, spokeswoman for Wheaton College in Illinois, said the confusion is common and she often receives inquires about the other Wheaton, a bit closer to Boston.
"We just chuckled about it and understood," she said of Curry's faux pas. "It was nice to hear our alumni mentioned in a positive way."
Curry apologized to the president of Wheaton College in Massachusetts, Ronald Crutcher, saying she was "mortified by my mistake."
Some alumni of that school who Curry could have mentioned are: National Medal of Science winner Dr. Mary Ellen Avery; "60 Minutes" reporter Lesley Stahl, and Oscar-nominated actress Catherine Keener.

For her part, Curry penned an open letter to the Wheaton community expressing that she was "mortified" by her mistake. She wrote, in part:
So it is with a heavy heart that I ask you to forgive me for mistakenly naming graduates of the other Wheaton College in my address.
I now know I should have named National Medal of Science winner Dr. Mary Ellen Avery, former New Jersey Governor and former EPA Director Christie Todd Whitman, literary agent Esther Newberg, Oscar-nominated actress Catherine Keener and Ken Babby, the youngest senior officer in the history of the Washington Post, among others. Thank goodness I got Leslie Stahl right.
I am mortified by my mistake, and can only hope the purity of my motive, to find a way to connect with the graduates and to encourage them to a life of service, will allow you to forgive me.
But to perhaps ad insult to injury, a Gawker.com commenter noticed that in her apology letter, Curry misspelled Lesley Stahl's first name.
