If you look at the entire scene, not only did he vocally abuse and contact the sideline official, but he also grabbed the referee while complaining about the flag.

Will the league office suspend him for contacting two officials?

If the "no touch" directive is really going to have teeth, a suspension is the way to drive home the point.

I hope not but he probably will be allowed to play.

Not if you lisen to all the highlight shows... They act as if simply ejecting Smith was highly questionable...

But, If Keyshawn did the same thing, People would be asking the league to give him a life time ban.

Great question. I doubt he gets suspended. I don't remember ever hearing of a player getting ejected and then suspended before now.

I know rules are rules, and your not suppose to touch a referee but come on. Steve's Adrenaline was high at that point and it's not like he punched or knocked down the ref. He was trying to plea his case on being unnessessarily thrown to the ground. And how do we know that he was vocally abusing the ref???? He could have been saying anything....let's not assume unless we know for sure. The ref may have only thrown the flag because of the contact. Be assured.....Steve Smith will play next week and will be a major factor in the game just like he is week in and week out. He is one of the best because he has the ability to get open almost any play. Having said this, let's (as Cowboy fans) hope he does not play. We need a loss by Carolina or Washington.....FYI Mark Brunell is likely out next week.

As one other poster stated rules are rules, but c'mon that was just an over zealous referee making that call. I have been a head referee for leagues from pee wee flag football all the way to the high school level for the last 3 years and I wouldn't have allowed my sideline referee throw out a teams star player for that minor of an infraction.

I had a game last year where I was the head ref and a team's star player kept taunting the opposing team's players and at one point started shouting profanities at them. I merely walked the player over to his coach and told the coach unless he wanted his player ejected he needed to get him under control. Well that player came out the next play and said another profanity, then the opposing coach said by the rules I had to eject that player. I asked that coach if he wanted me to decide the outcome of the game or if he wanted the players on the field to. The coach actually said he hadn't thought about it that way and said he respected that approach. Of course the same player did it a third time and I did eject him at that point.

I have seen other players grab refs and not get ejected for it. The thing none of us know is what Smith said to the ref, but even if he said hey you dummy that was a late hit, it shouldn't have gotten him ejected.

I'm an official too, and all I can say is if that is your way of handling that situation you have no business officiating youth sports, none, nada, zip.

You want to fix that problem?

The first time the player taunts, it's an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. If you'd have done what you should have done, the cussing does not happen, the heads up to the coach is not necessary, and perhaps there would not have been a 3RD TIME.

The talent level of the player should have zero impact on what you do or don't call. The rules must be enforced the same for all the players on both teams, or the official is not doing their job.

To do otherwise, ESPECIALLY AT THE YOUTH LEVEL, is a disgrace to officiating.

I honestly thought the ejection was a little odd. I only heard about it while I was shopping, so I was expecting something more reckless. When I saw the actual highlight, it looked like the ref had a people phobia. His eyes bugged out and he flipped. He must have tossed the flag up 25 ft., ha ha.

I'm not complaining, mind you... :)
