I grow weary with fans ascribing bad motives to the Jones family.

Hello? People?

Can we just agree that the Jones family is incompetent? Can we dispense with falsely accusing them of bad motives? Of course they want to win. They just don't know how.

Case in point - 2016 version: Romo gave the Cowboys the best chance to win in the playoffs in 2016, but the Cowboys stuck with Dak, instead of going back to their much more talented veteran QB. Could Romo have gotten injured again? Sure. But then they could still go back to Dak if that happened. They wasted a chance for success in the playoffs by bad judgement.

Case in point - 2007 version: Romo and the Cowboys had the best record in the NFC, and like the Giants, they had already played the Patriots once in the regular season, which would give them first hand insight on how to beat the Patriots in the playoffs. They had a rotation at RB that was tearing up the NFL - starting with Julius Jones in each half, and ending with Marion Barber in each half. That 1-2 punch caused them to tie the record for most ever wins in a season for a Cowboys team. What did they do? Change the rotation at RB, starting Marion Barber instead of Jones. Barber was depleted by halftime, and the Cowboys offense sputtered. One more case of bad judgement.

Case in point - 1998 version: Everyone expected the Cowboys to draft phenom WR Randy Moss, who would have been a replacement for Michael Irvin, and possible extended the career of Troy Aikman. They drafted DE Greg Ellis instead, and Randy Moss scorched them for the rest of his career. They compounded the mistake by trading two 1st round picks in 2000 for Joey Galloway, and then again in 2008 traded a 1st & 3rd round pick for WR Roy Williams. The lost 1st round pick in 2001 could have been, and probably would have been spent on QB Drew Brees. Essentially, they wasted four 1st round picks and a 3rd round pick on a WR that they could have had in 1998 if they simply made the right decision.

Case in point - 2017 version: They drafted Taco Charlton over T.J. Watt because DeMarcus Lawrence, who they traded 2nd & 3rd round picks in 2014 to select, was looking like a bust. When Charlton flamed out, they compounded the mistake by first, using the franchise tag in 2018, and then giving Lawrence a $100M contract in 2019.

People, it is simple incompetence, not malice or greed, that is leading the Jones family to fail... again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again...

Ultimately, this all started in the draft of 1995, a season after Jimmy Johnson left in February of 1994. The Cowboys famously drafted for backups since their starters were so good. Instead of drafting RB Curtis Martin, who went on to a HOF career, they drafted RB Sherman Williams. After the draft, they came out and admitted that they believed that Martin was better than Williams, but justified picking Williams because he would be "more willing to accept a backup role to Emmitt." Folks, when a front office stops drafting for starters, you can predict failure. The Cowboys went on to win the Super Bowl that year, but the die was cast. Failure soon followed, and it has continued for 2-1/2 decades. No one should be surprised - and it's not because the Jones family is evil. It's because they're dumb when it comes to how to win in the NFL.

It’s not drama, it’s a fear of losing relevancy (see money) if they’re not always relevant. For that reason, the Cowboys will never make the shrewd decisions needed to really turn over a roster. Nor will they ever go for broke for a ring and endanger their future relevancy. Jerry has on more than one occasion intimated that he’s fine with a mediocre teams as long as people are watching.

Decisions in the immediate aftermath of Jimmy leaving set the tone. The 1995 draft, and the failure to draft Randy Moss in 1998 had far reaching implications that are still reverberating to this day.

And just for the record, I blame Jimmy Johnson for the breakup of Jerry and Jimmy, more than I blame Jerry. I believe they needed each other. Both had big egos, but Jimmy pushed Jerry's buttons to force his way out and get paid - because he wanted to go back to Florida. Jerry was sucker-played by Jimmy, and without Jimmy to protect him, he still keeps getting sucker played to this day.

Don't get me wrong, I don't feel sorry for multi-billionaire Jerry. But he simply doesn't have the football chops to get it done on the field, no matter how brilliant a salesmen he is, or how much of a genius he is at marketing.

Those who suffer the most are the fans who are still emotionally invested in the games week-to-week. Jimmy is fat and happy catching fish in Florida. Jerry is frustrated, but very, very rich. The way he has incorporated his family into his business is something to envy for every father out there. But he sucks at football, and the fans who care the most suffer the most because of it.

come on now. Tell me you wouldn't be acting like them. You're some backwoods hick, just got lucky buying the Cowboys, and the news media sticks a mic in front of you. Now you're somebody, people will listen to your incoherent rambling and not question you. you get lucky hiring a college friend and get lucky winning 3 super bowls. You're somebody, all the kids and grandkids are somebody. "hey look at me, look what I can do"
It's a wonder the old dried-up prune doesn't have more kids coming forward saying you're my daddy.

Let's get all the kids and grandkids in on the draft. Heck, let one of the inbred kids pick in the second round. Look at us we got teeth now and are on tv. The honey boo of the NFL.

2007 and 2016 had nothing to do with the Joneses...lol

Never realized you were a Jerry apologist. Are you on his payroll? Are you Mickey?

Not quite sure how you can interpret me citing a litany of Jerry Jones mistakes as being a Jerry Jones apologist, but whatever, dude.

I agree Jerry is his own worst enemy, he wants to be remembered as a football guy not a owner and prove he can do it his way, he wants all the glory but so far it’s nothing but one mistake after another. to me the closest he could of got there was 2016 but he choose cheap young rookie QB he could take credit for instead of a veteran starter and that may of been his chance but Jerry the football guy blew it, then the 2017 jettison and now you see the divided fan base as a result .

IDK They're all billionaires. And most of the owners I never hear about. The most successful is Bob Kraft but I never hear from him until he is handed Lombardi trophies. Jerry is one of a kind.

You're right prior to 2014. Up until that point Jerry did everything he could in an attempt to win. Good or bad, the effort was there. Since around 2014 it has completely stopped. So now people are trying to figure out what the Cowboys are prioritizing over winning a SB. Everyone wants to win, even the owner of the Oakland A's. What they do to make it happen tells you how high it is on their list of priorities.

With the Jones family the real drive is making money and they can do that without having a good football team. Despite the team being stuck in the mud the past 27 years the Jones family and the franchise keeps getting richer.

Naw, they just aren't capable of building a super bowl team. They are doing the best they can within the limited confines of their ability.

Basically, they just aren't football smart and compound that with a refusal to hire anyone who disagrees with their decisions or sees things differently.
