'Women and children first' is a myth, shipwreck study shows

It's a question often asked: Is chivalry dead?

According to a recent study by two Swedish economists, that brand of gallantry is not only dead, it was buried at sea long ago.

Keen to test humanity's capacity for selflessness in times of scarcity and duress, the students of the "dismal science" reviewed survival data for some of history's worst shipwrecks.

What they found was that women and children were only half as likely as crew members and captains to survive maritime disasters.

Instead of "women and children first" and "the captain must go down with the ship," the rallying cry seemed to be "every man for himself," the authors wrote.

Sweet! Another wussy journalist has discovered that if you make a appeal that challenges the decency and courage of men, and even suggest that it's dead will get you attention and drive traffic to your site. No doubt this spin will get the author some attention.

it said survived. Does not mean they did not go into the boats first.

It got known because of the Titanic. But the facts are there are lots of cases of it clearly being done.

The thing is that not that many ships had women and children in them compared to those that did not.

Wonder how much money they got to come up with a totally worthless study?

Good question. A generation with multiple mindless studies finds itself economically bogged down. Then asks why.

All I know is we just had a situation in Colorado were (IIRC) 6 men bravely gave their life for women and child. And men like Welles Crowther who bravely gave their life to save many women in 9/11.

That should tell you what I think of that study.

So they're saying that professional sailors are more likely to survive a shipwreck than woman and children? Shocking!
