Women and Directions

I have always thought of myself as direction oriented. Even if I dont have a map I can get myself going in the general direction of where I need to go.I do admit that my job as a Real Estate Appraiser does help me in knowing every way there is to get some where and the quickest way to do it but even when I find myself in a new place I have never been, i have a sense of how to get somewhere. The women in my family tho just get lost coming out of the bath room. Walking out of a restaurant they have no idea where the car is even though they most likely parked it. A few years ago my wife picked me up at the airport and parked in the short term garage. I got my bags and said lets go, The panic look in her eyes let me know immediately that she had no idea where she parked the car or how to get to it. I sometimes pay my daughter to take some pictures for me and I give her a map. I may as well give her a book in Latin and ask her to read it

My grandson is just starting to drive and I am afraid to admit that he inherited his mother and grandmothers lack of sense of direction. He lives 30 miles from me and has been to my house 70 million times sometimes every day. When I pick him up at his house and tell him to go to my house he cant do it unless i give him turn by turn. God Help him!!

Anyway, it has always been a topic that I wonder about. How is it that men know this stuff and women typically dont. I know there are some exceptions both ways but is it something inherit in men and not in women? Do women just not care and so just dont process it. If i am needing directions I usually dont trust what a woman will tell me but take whatever a man says without question.

Are there any women out there that are truly gifted in directions or do they need a man or GPS to get them where they need to go. What happens when two women are in a car and get turned around? One of lifes many questions...

I don't think it has anything to do with men and women as I've seen men just as clueless and women who know where they are going at all times.

I think it's more of a natural situational awareness. I'm generally acutely aware of what direction is north, south, east, and west. I also keep aware of where I'm at when I make turns and stuff.

That said, prior to using Waze everywhere I go. I always had pinpoint directions to where I was going if I had never been there before.

I agree with the OP.
On average, not exclusively, but on average, men seem way better at direction orientation. No idea why that is.

Your grandson never payed attention to where they were going. He probably had his eyes glued to a game on his phone or something. I'm sure he'll be fine, now that he has to actually look to see where he's going.

Outside of my comfort zones, I have no sense of direction. I'll beat you in a race and get lost once I pass the finish line.

Interesting. My experience is generally the opposite.

I do believe we have some women here that will be more than happy to give the Rob some directions and it ain't in Florida.. LMAO, he's not going to like the destination much.

Seriously, I have never found this to be true but I have found it to be true that men are far less prone to ask for directions. However, were it true, I would like to go to where they're all hanging out cuz ole CC could have him some fun on the Island of Lost Women.

This theory was actually started a long time ago when Og gave Oot directions to the berry patch and instead of going there, she decided to leave Og and go to live with Gorg because he had prettier back hair. This caused Og to surmise Oot could not follow directions and got lost. Only when he saw Oot at the berry patch some 5 years later with her son, Mot, did he see Mot's back hair and put it altogether but he kept the directions myth alive out of a bruised ego.

After we were married, we lived in 6 different cities and my wife was better than I was at getting around and learning each city and one of those was Nawlins, a tough town to get around in for new drivers.

Rob, I can't answer for all women but I get lost if I leave the beaten path. When I'm riding, I'm sight seeing and not watching street signs. When I'm driving, I'm not watching street signs either. Too many of them to pay attention to every one.

Isn't that ironic. I experience EXACTLY the same with the men in my family.

My wife can't go anywhere without directions, unless she is on her phone and she doesn't think about it.

''Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology recently conducted experiments to learn more about gender and sense of direction. The researchers administered testosterone to women and tested how they performed in “wayfinding tasks” in a virtual environment.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a technology that measures brain activity, the researchers saw that men in the study took several shortcuts, oriented themselves more using cardinal directions and used a different part of the brain than the women in the study''.

these findings are just a small cross section from a research paper. in a short readers digest context, it seems we men plot and plan along an strait line of order. there is a valid argument that we men also can sense magnetic North better. sumthin to do with wiring up stairs.
women folk, they absorb the big picture and pick a task in no particular order. but are more attentive to small details.

Men folk ...when we go shopping at Walmart lets say. you probably run through knowing where everything is you need, a planned assault. you collect the items IN ORDER as you proceed through the isles.
Women folk. tend to shop. they like to look at things. they will expend 10 minutes deciding over a jar of pickles in isle 3 only then too remember she forgot the bread in isle 1. next is to return to isle 3 and put back the jar pickles.
