Yanks set to sign southpaw Feliciano

By Alden Gonzalez / MLB.com | 12/17/10 1:05 PM EST

NEW YORK -- The Yankees' search for lefty relief has reportedly brought them to one of the most durable relievers in baseball.

On Friday, the club agreed on a two-year contract with southpaw Pedro Feliciano, according to several media reports. Jon Heyman of SI.com and MLB Network, who first reported the deal, wrote that the contract is valued at $8 million and includes a third-year option.

The 34-year-old, who has spent his entire eight-year career with the Mets, has led the Majors in appearances each of the past three years, pitching in a total of 266 games and putting up a 3.44 ERA.

In 92 appearances in 2010, Feliciano posted a 3.30 ERA, a 1.53 WHIP and a 1.87 strikeout-to-walk ratio before rejecting the Mets' arbitration offer. Feliciano has limited opposing lefty hitters to a .214 batting average in his career and didn't surrender a home run to them in 139 chances in 2010.

The Yankees declined comment on the deal, which isn't official until he passes a physical, and Feliciano's agent could not be reached by MLB.com.

I think it's a real good signing. He's a guy who can give you a lot of solid innings and he pitches well. The Yankees needed another solid middle reliever. He's a pretty good one and the price was pretty reasonable.

I think it's a good signing. If he pitches like he has his entire career, he can help the Yankees in a position that needed improvement.

He's more of a LOOGY than a middle reliever-- Jerry Manuel just didn't know how to use him.

(That's a compliment by the way)

Lets take not getting Cliff Lee to an all new level. EPIC FAIL! :lmao2:

For the Yanks or for the Rangers NYC?

I mean, the Yanks never really had him.

Very good pickup by NY.

Spend the money they were going to spend on Lee for the bullpen and the bench. Shorten the games to 6 innings.

The July trading deadline will present more and less expensive options for improving the starting rotation.
