I'm a huge fan of great lyrics: Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Bonnie Raitt, Harry Chapin, etc.

But my favorite lyric is probably Concrete Blonde's, from the song Days and Days.

"...But in the morning, when the light
Comes creeping in around my eyes
Another future falls behind
The one I had in mind "

I find it a very poetic way to express disappointment in how life has been turning out so far.

What are your more obscure lyrics, that you want to share with the class?

"Have you ever loved somebody
Secretly loved somebody who didn't know
Have you fell in love with somebody
Deeply loved somebody who didn't know"

Tons of love songs have been written. There are some songs about just crushes also. Not many songs are about crushes so one-sided that only the person with the crush feels anything about the other person.

Zhane's song Crush exposes all the passion and sadness of a totally one-sided, deep-seated affection for someone oblivious to those unsaid feelings. For me, the lyrics took unrequited love to a higher tier of emotion.

I have spoken to others about their crushes. From that, I would say most people have experienced them to some degree in their lives, usually during their teens or early twenties. I felt one in high school that strong but was lucky enough that person, (not my eventual wife y'all  ) who finally 'saw' me and returned my feelings with her own. The lyrics always remind me the power of an unforgiving, unquestionable crush for another.

The duo Zhane had a handful of hits like Request Line and Hey Mr. DJ but never became superstars, although they have a solid R&B following. Music lovers, who are not familiar with them but saw the movie A Low Down Dirty Shame may remember them from that soundtrack for the song Shame.

Definitely makes you remember the pain and angst.

"I don't mind stealin' bread from the mouth of decadence.
I won't feed on the powerless when my cup's already overfilled"

"I'm goin' hungry...."

Great lyrics. Not obscure to me, but maybe to others here!

Metallica - Harvester of Sorrow

The song is about what drugs and alcohol can do to your life.

[Verse 1]
My life suffocates.
Planting the seeds of hate.
I've loved, turned to hate.
Trapped far beyond my fate
I give.
You take.
This life that I forsake
Been cheated of my youth.
You've turned this lie to truth

[Pre-Chorus]
Anger, misery.
You'll suffer unto me

[Chorus]
Harvester of sorrow (Language of the mad)
Harvester of sorrow

[Verse 2]
Pure black looking clear.
My work is done soon here.
Try getting back to me.
Get back which used to be,
Drink up, shoot in,
Let the beatings begin.
Distributor of pain.
Your loss becomes my gain

[Pre-Chorus]
Anger, misery.
You'll suffer unto me

[Chorus]
Harvester of sorrow (Language of the mad)
Harvester of sorrow

[Verse 3]
All have said their prayers,
invade their nightmares
To see into my eyes,
you'll find where murder lies
Infanticide

[Chorus]
Harvester of sorrow (Language of the mad)
Harvester of sorrow (Language of the mad)

[Outro]
Harvester of sorrow
Harvester of sorrow
Harvester of sorrow
Harvester of sorrow
Harvester of sorrow
Harvester of sorrow

I always like the lyrics to Somebody to Love by Jefferson Airplane. And Grace Slick did a great job singing them. Also, the base riff throughout the song is pretty special for its time.

When the truth is found to be lies
And all the joy within you dies

[Chorus]
Don't you want somebody to love?
Don't you need somebody to love?
Wouldn't you love somebody to love?
You better find somebody to love
Love, love

[Verse 2]
When the garden flowers
Baby, are dead, yes and
Your mind, your mind is so full of red

[Chorus]
Don't you want somebody to love?
Don't you need somebody to love?
Wouldn't you love somebody to love?
You better find somebody to love

[Bridge]
Your eyes, I say your eyes may look like his
Yeah, but in your head, baby
I'm afraid you don't know where it is

[Chorus]
Don't you want somebody to love?
Don't you need somebody to love?
Wouldn't you love somebody to love?
You better find somebody to love

[Verse 3]
Tears are running
They're all running down your breast
And your friends, baby
They treat you like a guest

[Chorus]
Don't you want somebody to love?
Don't you need somebody to love?
Wouldn't you love somebody to love?
You better find somebody to love

Roger Waters, IMO is among the best song writers in the history of R&R. This verse from Time really feeds the feeling of missing out.

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
Sun is the same, in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

I’m not really an Airplane fan but I also love the lyrics to White Rabbit. To me music makes the day everyday. I have always said that artists are the blessed of the blessed.

I have to admit, this isn't a Metallica song that I've ever cared for. It always seemed too monotonous (?). After reading the lyrics, I'll give it another listen, since it's on a great album.

My favorite Pink Floyd song! It gets more true every time you listen.

This is a line from a Jon Dee Graham song "Faithless"

The story of your life
Written page by page
Oh, careful what you write
You're gonna have to read it all someday

The song is about reflections on life and past decisions made

Ugh, I can never just name a Metallica song and say it's my favorite Metallica song, but this one is DEFINITELY up there. The lyrics are awesome and I always felt it's composition was excellent.

The only song on And Justice For All that even comes close to competing with Harvester of Sorrow in my book is Dyers Eve. Which is right up there with Damage Inc and Battery from Master of Puppets. (though those three songs run at very high RPM, which is a bit much for those not initiated into thrash metal)

Speaking of lessor known songs. Dyers Eve!

This song is about parents overprotecting their kids and not allowing them to grow up and be prepared for the world
and the disservice that does to them

Dyers Eve

[Verse 1]
Dear mother, dear father
What is this hell you have put me through?
Believer, deceiver
Day in, day out, lived my life through you
Pushed onto me what's wrong or right
Hidden from this thing that they call life

[Verse 2]
Dear mother, dear father
Every thought I'd think you'd disapprove
Curator, dictator
Always censoring my every move
Children are seen but are not heard
Tear out everything inspired

[Refrain]
Innocence, torn from me without your shelter
Barred reality, I'm living blindly

[Verse 3]
Dear mother, dear father
Time has frozen still, what's left to be?
Hear nothing, say nothing
Cannot face the fact I think for me
No guarantee it's life as is
But damn you for not giving me my chance

[Verse 4]
Dear mother, dear father
You clipped my wings before I learned to fly
Unspoiled, unspoken
I've outgrown that [bleeping] lullaby
Same thing I've always heard from you
Do as I say, not as I do

[Refrain]
Innocence, torn from me without your shelter
Barred reality, I'm living blindly

[Bridge]
I'm in hell without you
Cannot cope without you two
Shocked at the world that I see
Innocent victim, please rescue me

[Verse 5]
Dear mother, dear father
Hidden in your world you've made for me
I'm seething, I'm bleeding
Ripping wounds in me that never heal
Undying spite I feel for you
Living out this hell you always knew

[Outro]
No!
