I don't understand why the Cowboys fear 'cap hell'

This isn't the English Premier League. There isn't a risk of demotion. If anything, being really bad for a couple of years rewards you with picking high which lets you fill your roster with high end talent (look how quickly guys like Hutchinson, Daniels, Burrows, etc have turned franchises around). I'd rather go actually go 'all-in' for a 3-4 year window by supplanting your good draft with effective FA pickups and see if you can win. Its worked for the Eagles, Rams and Bucs recently although obviously not guaranteed. Worst case you have to be poor for 1-2 years but with our scouting department, we should be able to recover faster than other teams. I'd much rather that than solely rely on our draft and D-list FA's which leads us to multiple 8-9 to 11-6 type years where we're never bad enough to get high picks (short of a QB injury) nor good enough to actually compete for a SB.

Dallas hasn't won in 30 years but is still a draw. Trying to win in a certain window and then rebuilding isn't going to lose you fans. It'll just give us hope in those years you do go for it.

Jerral likes having marquee names to sell jerseys and tickets. Also. "being around the rim" keeps the team media-relevant and gets national TV games.

He wants to win just enough to maximize revenue while minimizing risk and effort. And no, he doesn't give one lick of concern for what anyone else thinks.

I'm not sure they actually fear CAP HELL. How many teams have ever been in real cap hell? How long did it take to get out of it?
Some would say that the Browns are in CAP hell because they can't do anything about that Watson deal, and he really fell completely off the podium after his legal issues.

I think the Joneses just like to make money, get attention, and build a franchise to support generations in the family.
Jerry was only burned by free agency twice that I can remember, and frankly, while Carr wasn't Deon and CB, he wasn't awful either, just overpaid. Zeke just ran out of fuel too soon.

Jerry wants to win, but he wants to win while making as much money as possible.

Jerry thinks he can win Championships with 5th round Comp picks. That is Stephen 's secret recipe for success.

I don't think it is that they fear it, I think they don't understand it or they really are just too cheap...
They think overpaying their own players is enough. But in fact they are the only team in the league that completely ignores 1 of the 3 team building avenues. They draft and they re-sign their own. They are completely incompetent and don't understand the need for outside free agents. I wonder if the Cowboy GM could even name 25% of the starting OL in the NFL. How are you supposed to be expected to make a decision on giving a guy a huge contract when you have no clue about him or his value. Jerry has about the same knowledge of the players in the league as Taylor Swift does...

Counting on a fifth round pick to be an immediate starter instead of signing a veteran FA for a desperately needed position is what Stephen calls “secret sauce.”

One small example.

Clearly the TOP priority is trying to avoid years that are clearly bad so they can still sell their product and claim to be “close.”

They are about to find out that those type of years are going to happen anyway. Sure glad they were conservative with the cap in 21-23 so we don’t have cap problems now.

Maybe we should consider to stop wasting 4th round picks. That could help a little.

Jerseys sales are down. So he will draft a WR or RB in round 1.

apparently the Eagles QB plays for free and the organization has no interest in selling player apparel

29 years. And we will bookend 30 + 30 in 2025.

You should be happy they have a philosophy. At least they are not chasing what ever fad is in the league. Continue to draft well Stephen(though the last two have not been immediate home runs ). One day you will find that right combination! You've done a good job for over a decade now. As the great Samuel Sosa used to say--keep it continuing

I wonder if Jerry's just worried about spending all available funds, then having it not pay off, and looking like a bad businessman.

Every team starts with the same amount of money they have to spend, so in a way, it's like Monopoly money. If he doesn't spend it all, he can't lose the game.

Dallas just want to be competitive year in and year out so they will be spoken about.

There is no real effort to win a Super Bowl by the front office.

Dumpster dive in FA then our real upgrades are rookies.

That’s the plan.
