Spotrac 2025 projected Franchise Tag numbers

Well, a lot of the big contracts are backloaded to free up cap space and a lot of money is given to them in the signing bonus too b/c that money can be spread over 5 years. The only number that matters in the end is guaranteed money. We fell into the same hole as Cleveland in that regard.
231 of the 240 million is guaranteed. The cap hit is one thing, but he is going to be here for the entire four years of the contract, as will Shoddy.

Fans seem pumped…and they ought to be!

A 2nd tag is going to be quite a bit more than that listed tag. Enough to make it quite foolish for a #2 WR!
I mean it will be 20% more. Considering he is going to get 30m+ on the open market it will still be less than the AAV that he will get on his extension, as his tag would only be 26.2m. Given that they seem to want to keep Higgins, who outside of health is a top 10 WR, that seems to be a decent move to make that happen. However, there is not a single other player worth the tag this year so it says a lot of about upcoming free agency that the best player available was the best player available last year.

Very good point. Some of these numbers are going to kill player negotiations. Looking at the DE tag number it gives the Cowboys a ton of leverage on Micah. At $21M the Cowboys could look to play hard ball as even the 2nd year tag will still be well under the $40M he could ask for in a long term extension. These numbers give teams a really good opportunity to hit QBs with the tag as well.

He’s barely eclipsed 1k yards twice in 5 seasons while having the luxury of Chase drawing all the double teams across from him. He’s a #2 at best… anyone that gives him 30m is going to have buyers remorse in very short order!

That would be due to the aforementioned injury concerns. Last year, just as an example, he was on pace for 1300 yards but missed 5 games with injury putting him at a little over 900. There basically is no one who watches tape and will not tell you Tee Higgins is a top 10 WR in the NFL. The gap between when Higgins plays and when he does not is staggering for that offense. The Bengals offense goes from looking unstoppable to unstartable. It actually a pretty big concern for them long term.

I remember when the “Dak over Dallas” fans (like Rockport, AC, Rambo, Ken, etc) celebrated when Dak was stupidly given a new contract for $60 million/year.

And then most of those fans ran away and hid after a few weeks.

Jerry bid against himself while extending the length of negotiation. I am beginning to see that people that claim to be great deal makers usually are not.

Lol,
And yet he’s never eclipsed 1100 yards despite playing the opposite side of a WR who not only is doubled every play but by the opposing teams #1 corner! Higgins is a solid #2 possession receiver in this league… nothing more!

Every single NFL GM would say you are wrong. Again the statement is if not for injury and if not for injury he would have over 1100 yards (the fact that you picked that random benchmark is hilariously transparent by the way) each of the last 4 years. Considering the argument is "if not for injuries he is unquestionably a top 10 WR" if your metric is 1100 yards then we get to extrapolate that number based on if he was not injured.

By the way Chase is actually rarely doubled BECAUSE of Higgins. He can only be doubled when Higgins does not play. It is the main reason that the Bengals offense loses more than a TD per game in scoring when Higgins does not play. There are few players, outside of QB, who can cause an offense to drop off that hard when they do not play. He is basically the entire key to their offense because without him they doubled Chase and he gets shut down, but teams cant stop both of them. Whenever a team tries to stop one of them the other gets 150 yards that game.

And yet, Chase still comfortably put up 1000 yard seasons even in those seasons Higgins missed considerable time. Including the past 2 seasons!
Higgins is a #2, someone is going to drastically overpay him and have buyer’s remorse. He’ll be back on the market 3 seasons from now!

Yes Chase got yards good for him and if the goal of the Bengals offense was to get Chase yards then they would be great without Higgins. Unfortunately that is not the goal of the Bengals offense. The goal of the Bengals offense is to score points and they are more than a TD worse without Higgins and the passing yards drop off significantly as well. There are maybe 5 WRs who you can point to who have anywhere near that influence over an offense and everyone of them is a number 1.

So yes if you could guarantee health all 32 GMs would find a way to pay him 30m and all 32 GMs would not regret it because every single one of them views him as a top 10 WR. Now maybe you are saying you are better at personnel evaluation than them (doubtful though because you did not even realize that chase rarely gets doubled). However I am going to say that is unlikely and there is a big reason the goal of the Bengals is to sign Higgins because they also know their offense does not work without him.

Lol,
30m for a #2 WR… let us pray that it’s Washington!

Agents have pretty much killed the backloaded contracts by insisting on shorter 4 and 5 year contracts that pay guaranteed money upfront. Why so many teams are having to resort to prorated contracts into void years!
Well, duh. Players were signing contracts that were entirely stupid to begin with.
