Steve Shimko is the new QB coach

He worked with Schotty in Seattle for a couple of years. More familiarity.

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have hired Boston College offensive coordinator Steve Shimko as an offensive assistant, the team can confirm, after Will Harriger was hired away from the Cowboys' coaching staff this offseason to be the quarterbacks coach for the Carolina Panthers.

Shimko reunites with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer in Dallas after the two spent two seasons together in Seattle in 2018 and 2019. Shimko's prior experience includes working as a graduate assistant at Rutgers, Western Michigan and Georgia before landing on-field at Garden City Community College as the JUCO powerhouse's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2016. He would hold that position for two years before moving onto the Seahawks for two seasons. Boston College then came calling as he served as tight ends coach in 2020 and 2021, quarterbacks coach in 2022 and offensive coordinator for the Eagles this past season.

well he got the best he could out of a 5'9 QB and there Running attack all backs averaged about 6.0 yards a carry.. the lest amount was 4.8 and most was 8.0. So i think we are moving to the wish bone read option offense with all these hires.

Assistant QB coach.

One year.

Now, given a minute to digest this... I'm gonna figure that it's just a matter of giving a bigger title than probably will be the real life role... giving these guys some props for their resume's next time a chance to advance opens up.

Dorsey is more like the real QB coach, and Shimko will be his assistant... but this arrangement just makes them both seem more important.

I really think that's probably more accurate than anyone is going to admit. Just makes so much more sense.

And, no, @CanadianCowboysFan that's not fair to me. If there's one thing I try hard to do, it's to be consistently candid and candidly consistent. That standard has been checked off once again here. :)
Exactly what I was thinking. Dorsey is the unofficial QB coach, while Shimko gets a good title.

That’s now 3-4 former OC’s as position coaches. Lots of ideas in the room hopefully

Dak has been in the league now for 9 years and has plateaued…it doesn’t matter who the QB coach is…

So, Brian... you think this is a guy qualified to play mentor to a veteran NFL QB?

The WR and QB coach decisions are almost like you pulled a resume' out of a pile and said, "Yeah, let's to get this guy. What's his name again?"
He's basically going with people he knows and helping them take a step up the ladder.......... much like he was just given.

I mean, does it really matter who our QB coach is? At this point, Dak should already have all the tools and knowlege he needs. Heck, might as well make me QB coach!!

That's actually what I expected to happen, but it didn't actually play out that much.

Coaches he is known to have had a previous connection with are:

  • Nick Sorenson (SEA 2018-20)
  • Carlos Polk (JAX 2021)
  • Andre Curtis (SEA 2018-20)
  • Steve Shimko (SEA 2018-20)

If we set aside Lunda Wells who one could make the argument was always a Joneses favorite and was staying anyway... only one of those will coach offense, where it would have been natural to believe he'd want to have "his guys."

Eberflus is the one who brought "his guys" to this staff. (Which is fine by me.)

So, look, I'm nodding in approval now that I've had a couple of minutes to process the QB coach hire and understand it in the broader context. I'm feeling okay about the hires as a rule. It's good to have some fresh faces in the room who've gained some regard at a lower level. A few, anyways. I'm only pointing out that, as far as we can know, he went outside his personal comfort zone for the majority of the staff.

If I have one diehard criticism, it's that I don't regard Eberflus' cup of coffee in CHI to be especially meaningful, and I hope they'll still yet bring to the operation someone for that "analyst" role that Josina got hoodwinked into believing (and reporting) Dorsey was getting. And by "someone," I mean someone with actual NFL coaching pedigree of something more than a cup of coffee. Schotty's not so new he needs anyone to hold his hand, so I don't mean it that way. But what I do mean is that even those of us experienced and well-regarded in our fields gain something from having someone we respect and is capable to offer recommendations that come from experience (not so much theory). Mind you, no, you're right, they've never filled that position with that kind of pedigree on the couple of times they've hired someone to do it. McAdoo just had a cup of coffee in NYG. Schotty, obviously, is just now getting a gig. I want someone with some stronger list of failures and successes to reference from his history. I don't even say this with any specific name in-mind... only that that's the kind of asset I propose could be significant.

Who the heck knows how this guy will be able to work with Dak's new found health, but can they not choose a dude whose last name doesn't sound like Stinko?

Hmmm with the OC and QB coach roles confirmed in place, i wonder what description role the incoming Ken Dorsey will have ..?
Director of fumbled snaps, costly interceptions, and throwing slightly off target.

Coached at a Juco power house plus Boston College and the Seahawks . I mean tons of experience what’s not to like about this hire ?

What an excellent coaching staff,if Shottenheimer can handle the head coaching duties, I have confidence this organization has improved. Right now Shottenheimer looks like a good hire, what happens now depends on the players added in free agency and the draft.Go Cowboys.

QB coach during Wilson’s best years in Seattle
Dark is NOT Wilson Dak has already hit his ceiling. He is now fading and injury prone. His legs are no longer a weapon. The guy can’t even maneuver to avoid sacks anymore. No coach on the Planet will make deck a Super Bowl caliber QB. Eight years in the league and the guy still has trouble with zone defenses. Unfortunately, we are stuck with him.

He did well with Wilson

Just give them some talent to work with and I think they will be ok
