by that measure of value then Mahomes should have carried the Chiefs to another SB win.
BUT HE DID NOT because the TEAM AROUND HIM was not as good
and if you are paying 25% of the cap for one player you are going to have a LOT OF HOLES
Sure, every position is heavily team dependent; but if you were to build a league average team with the rest of that money and put Mahomes on it, they would outproduce a team with a league average QB and that extra money allocated to other positions

is that not what the Eagles just did? Beat a lesser team with a much better QB?
They won because the rest of the team was better than Mahomes and the Chiefs; not because of Hurts

What we were discussing is roster building ideology in a vacuum when the QB is hitting the cap for a large amount like Dak. Hurts will be hitting for peanuts for a long while.

Opportunity to do what Philly did isn’t available for most teams. Yes, if you prepare over the next 5-10 years your salary cap, draft picks, acquisitions and contracts you can achieve what Philly did . But that would require hitting on all draft picks and FAs, which is not a realistic expectation to have. Otherwise every single team that doesn’t have a Mahomes or a Burrow or an Allen or a Lamar would be doing this.

Philadelphia and SF have managed to build talent all over the team to contend for championships, but all other teams that are consistently getting that far have that upper echelon top 4 QB. So that’s 2-3 (Rams too kind of) who beat the system, 4 who are profiting from the system, and 25 who are left behind

how many really elite QBs are there at any one time? Right now you could say maybe four, right?
So teams have a one in eight chance of winning a SB that way.

Therefore, it is much more sensible to build the rest of the team and look for the best QB you can get.

Historically, during the Salary cap era, it’s probably more beneficial to dump your above average/solid starting QB and constantly hunt for the next elite QB than to build around the one you got. For every Hurts with a ring, you have a Mahomes with 3 and counting, a Brady with 7, a Peyton with 2, a Brees with 1, a Rodgers with 1, a Warner with 1, etc

But then if you go the route you’re suggesting, you have to be absolutely convinced if you give Dak that elevated team that he can win with them. Not with what Philly had, but with whatever Dallas can muster
