Would the Cowboys use the franchise tag on any of our free agents this off season?

Problem with tagging Osa is it’s 23m$ for 1 year. Playing on the tag with be a 23m$ cap hit for this year, but extending him could lower that dramatically. So if you tag him with plans to extend him, there’s no benefit for him to sign an extension for less than 23m$ a year when he has a 23m$ deal right in front of him.

So tag him if you think he’s a 23m$+ DT, but if you don’t then let him walk

he's nowhere near 20 anything!!!! 12 maybe

Would you take Osa over Milton?

Best way to attack Philly is to take away one of their FA's at a position of need. Or at least make them over pay to keep them.
If we had an actual NT next to osa I would take osa. He’s really good against pass. But we don’t so I’d rather have the more complete player who isn’t as good in passing game but better all around. I haven’t looked at his projected salary but I suspect mid 20’s like osa

If they don't tag him, he will be looking at a 17m a year type deal for 4 years with 30m guaranteed. So if the Cowboys can get him at a price of around 15m a year for 3 years with 30m guaranteed then it could work. Maybe throw in 5 million in incentives for reaching certain goals like 10 sacks, and 70 percent snap count on defense.

But the downside is if you don’t tag him, then you go into a bidding war with the 31 other teams. Starting caliber 3-tech DT’s are a commodity, and they often get well over their value in FA. Christian Wilkins isn’t a lot better than Osa, and he got 27m$ a year from the Raiders last year.

Not saying Osa will go for that much, but it’s a hope and a prayer that some massive cap room team doesn’t give him 20+

Very great points. Letting him test FA and another team might go big on a new contract. A lot of teams with a good amount of cap to spend. If any team spends more than 20 mil a year on him then they can have him though. That is just way too much. If I was the Cowboys front office then my final offer would be like 18m a year for 3 years and fully guaranteed.

Downside if you tag him, you will pay him more than anyone else would have.

I suppose the transition tag would be a possibility, that's what 18-19 a year? Probably a few million above what I think the top end of Osa's contract should be, but these are the type of guys that get paid and for a few million extra do you just retain his services to avoid creating a bigger hole?

I still think you consider BJ Hill and Jarren Reed as replacements. It's just hard to think about paying a guy with 13.5 career sacks 20+ million a year. I get that some things he does don't show up on the stat sheet, but at some point you have to consider how much you want to pay a good, not great player and is he a slightly better version of Collins?

Osa if anyone, but an effort needs to be made to retain his services long term. 1 year, $23m is steep. The issue is the void left behind if he isn't retained. Mazi becomes the best DT on the team. This free agency class isn't rich at DT, and Osa is projected as the best available. Is Milton Williams going to come cheaper? That I don't know, but there would be a guaranteed bidding war if that's the move. Draft assets can be spent, but DT's are notoriously slow to develop. Going into the draft looking for a starter and a couple of rotational guys is flirting with disaster.

We've been saying it for years, decades even that the position needs to be taken seriously, yet here were are, looking to let our best player at the position walk because once again, he's too expensive. Sometimes you have to pay more to keep guys like Osa. Maleik Collins comes to mind. Otherwise there's no continuity at the position, and we're left with uncertainty, chaos, and a massive hole in the middle of the defense. This team is dead on arrival if significant assets aren't pumped into the position. It's just a matter of keeping our own, signing other expensive free agents, overlooking other needs in the draft hoping to find a day 1 starter, or taking a gamble hoping to find a couple of guys that operate well in the system. None sound appealing. I say do everything we can to keep him, unless the front office determines that this year's team isn't ready to compete.

Franchise tag window starts on 2/18/25, is there a player you could see us tagging, would it even be beneficial?? Please give your thoughts
I’d transition tag Osa! Let other teams set his market and give the chance to match if it’s not as high as what his agent is anticipating!

Jethro will let him walk for a comp pick and the following year.

Why would we FT anyone, that creates a one year max CAP HIT, that isnt spread into future years?

No one is getting tagged on the Cowboys. In fact the only candidate in the entire NFL to get tagged is Higgins who was tagged last year. So the free agency is so bad that the only guy worth tagging was tagged last year as well.
