Tampa Bay Buccaneers
TE O.J. Howard

He struggled throughout his first season in Bruce Arians' offense, which has been notorious for not getting the tight end involved vertically as much as Dirk Koetter's did. The Bucs did entertain offers for Howard before the trade deadline. Going to an offense that utilizes him differently might be what he needs to rejuvenate his career. -- Jenna Laine

If he were a free agent, maybe he would be worth at least talking too. But he's under contract, and I wouldn't want to trade anything of value for him

In the final year of his rookie contract. Cheap this year, but you'd have to pick up a $9 - $10 million 5th year option if you're trading anything of value for him. That's the big factor some may not be considering.

His 5th year option would be ~$6 million dollars, not 9.

Where did you read that? I saw $9-$10.

You’re number would be right if he was a top 10 pick. 5th year options for top 10 picks is equal to the transition tag at his position in his 4th year, which is based on the top 10 salaries (estimated $9.2 million for 2020. Non top 10 picks get the average of salaries 3-25. $6 million is my estimate based on that formula.

Here's what I read.

He’s only in the third year of his rookie deal, which means he will be a bargain over the next two seasons. In fact, his 2020 salary is slated at $1.97 million and will likely increase to about $9-$10 million if his fifth-year option is approved the year after.

(For context’s sake, Ja’Wuan James was the 19th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and made a little over $9.3 million in 2018.)

But you're right, estimates seem to vary, with some having the same $6 million that you're quoting.

If the Cowboys bring Howard into a mix of TE's, I'm all for that.

If the Cowboys bring him in, and is the only real TE they bring in, and count on him being the potential starter next year, I'm completely against that.

Also the Bucs would lose 1.5 Million against the cap if they traded him so they would have to be motivated to move him.

Word is that they did take calls on him last year, but the asking price was too high. It will likely be somewhat lower this year, but still tough to say where exactly.

I'd rather keep my draft picks and just sign Eric Ebron for $6 - $7 million as a free agent.

After the Robert Quinn trade of a low pick for a preset contract I'd listen to this kind of thing for sure. But it seems like a guy like Ebron makes a lot more sense.

I think the only real mysteries of the offseason are who they sign in FA at TE and DT.

Why’s that? He’s talented as all get out and we still have Jarwin

Ebron would really do well here.

Witten had 65 catches for 500+ yds, and 3 TDs?

Ebron should double all those numbers with Dak dumping the ball off in the WCO.

"Low round pick"? I'll listen too. But for me, low round means 6th or later. I doubt the Bucs aim so low.

A big one for me is keeping Quinn over Byron Jones. Looking at the draft, defensive back looks more plentiful in that first round over finding another pass rusher.
