Yup. Stephen likes to sell to everyone that we aren't big players in FA because we are superb drafters. But the reality is our drafts have failed to impress since 2016, an eternity in the NFL.
I doubt Trysten Hill even makes the team in 2020.
The general rule is that it can take 3 years to really know about a draft class, plus we have to remember that successful drafting doesn't mean finding a significant player in every round. If a team can find 4-5 guys that stick, and 2-3 guys that eventually become starters it is a pretty good draft.
2016 is pretty hard to judge against. That was kind of a home run for the Cowboys.
The jury certainly is still out on 2019. Our first looks at Hill have been disappointing, but it's still too early to give up on him. McGovern was injured, so we can't judge him yet. Pollard was a very nice pick in the 4th round, and I have hope for Donovan Wilson. Then, of course, we used our first round pick on Cooper, and that has to be factored in.
The jury is also still out on 2018. LVE looked like a good pick until the neck injury, so how the neck heals will be a big key. It seems Connor Williams may be a bit less of a player than we hoped, but at a minimum he should be a strong backup that can start if needed. Gallup was a big plus in the 3rd round, and Armstrong, Schultz and Wilson may be at least decent depth. Time is still the key - have to see how these guys fit going forward.
2017 was very mediocre. We got 3 starting level players, but no standouts, and the rest of the draft was a bust.
