Truth be told.....Jones probably got screwed over because of coaching as well just like a lot of these guys did. That being said...I never been a fan of his leg. I liked McBriar in his prime. Big leg type of guy. Jones just represents the mediocrity that's plagued this team. "Good enough" but I don't feel you have to have good enough at the punter position. I feel like you can find much better than that and not break the bank or use heavy resources.

I was wondering why he wasn’t in the NFL, he Was really good from what I remember

Simple. He’s an outspoken, dancing and celebrating punter. Teams for some reason don’t want the headache.

But I’ll take a 75 yard punt with some celebration after it.

Exactly my point. We arent talking about a starting QB here. This has got to be one of the lowest hanging fruit as far as team improvement goes. Just do the thing. At his best he's been league average, when he's being average Chris Jones he's near the bottom of the league.

32nd in 2019 and 26th in 2018 in yards per punt.
33rd in 2019 and 24th in 2018 in longest punt.

He's not even cheap as far as punters go. His average per year is in the top 15 at the position. We're gonna have a 2.4M cap hit for one of the worst in the league when a 6th round draft pick cant do worse.

I've been saying this all offseason.

I agree. One thing I will say that in prior years probably ran him on a fake or two and he could tackle. He's not even doing that at this point. Maybe his ability to throw and run might help him make the team next season but if they are going to be conservative there's no point. You can do better.

We all know reality bites, but you don't have to disrespect the guy like that. I hope he gives you a timeout so you can reflect on your misbehavior.

hopefully competition will be brought in, simple enough Jones is not all about power but has different traits but hopefully we ll see if hes good enough with the new Dallas Cowboys.
Our previous loser staff didn’t believe in bringing in competition and it blew our chances of making the playoffs. Maher should’ve been cut after week 4.

Maher should've never been kept over Dan Bailey.

I still want Nick Rose as our punter. I remember him from his college days at Texas. He use to wheel off 70 yard punts like it was nothing. The 'Skins had him as a field goal kicker, but he's one heck of a punter.

Good refreshing topic for a change. Give Jones the pink slip as well. Our infamous punter was 34th in the league last season in punt distance minus returns.

Jones has two years left on his current contract and counts $2.4 million against the 2020 salary cap. Dallas would get $1.4 million in cap relief if they show him the door. Another no brainer.

Jones can pass and run better than most punters (was a track guy). Fassel likes his fakes so he'll like this.

A punter's number one job is to punt well. A few decent fakes aren't worth poor execution of 60 to 70 punts.

Back when Dan Bailey was still here, I thought the Cowboys had 2 great kickers. Outside of those 2, I thought we had a very weak ST.

FYI on why Jones was so poor at the end. There is no shot for an abdomen problem. If you have ever kicked before its painful if you have a strained abdominal.

Cowboys' Chris Jones: Will play Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Jones (abdomen) does not have an injury designation for Sunday's game against Philadelphia.

Jones was limited in practice all week but will give it a go Sunday. There was never much doubt as Dallas did not sign any alternatives.

Cowboys' Chris Jones: Nursing abdomen strain
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Jones is apparently dealing with an abdomen strain, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Given the news about Jones' abdomen strain, his status is worth monitoring as kickoff approaches next week. The Cowboys currently do not have another punter on their roster.

I wasn't aware of this. What was the injury?
Abdomen strain, which really effects the torque you can create to punt.

I thought they should have put him on IR because it wasn't healing.

That really could affect the ability to punt. He had been a quality punter until last year, so he should get the chance to heal and come back. I would have options in camp though.

Per Mike Fish Rumor mill has it that Chris Jones spent most of the season laboring with an injury issue (back issues ?) .And thus suffered his worst season as a punter.

Look for the Cowboys to entertain several more new punters in camp,... and it won't be for the sake of camp bodies either.
I think Chris Jones career is done here in Dallas. I don't expect team to re-sign him.

Ironically we'll also be looking for new kickers as well. That's gonna be a challenge for new special teams coach Fassel.
BTW, I'm also really hoping for a new and improved punt returner .. vs Tavon Austin's timid sideways returning. He offered nuthin there last year.
