Rapoport: Cowboys will likely use exclusive tag rather than non-exclusive tag on Dak if no agreement

As I've said a few times, IF it comes to this(him getting tagged), I honestly believe we could be looking at the beginning of the end. Look, they've had almost 2 years to get ready for this deal. Here was are near the 12th hour and they STILL CAN'T agree. The kicker is Dak numbers are only getting higher, whether Stephen waits until regular or next year. If he's not willing to meet Dak number now, what you think they'll be a year from now. For example, I'm sure Dak would sign for $30M immed after the 2018 season but of course, then he was only worth $25M in the eyes of many. So what would have looked like an overpay then NOW would be a bargain.

The Cowboys will tag Dak at this price if they are unable to agree upon a new longterm deal by the time free agency starts next month. It would give the Cowboys time to keep on negotiating a new contract without losing Dak. The only problem is it would cost the Cowboys their only exclusive tag for the year.

Thanks Ian. A team is going to use the tag on a starting quarterback. Who knew?

I think the nonexclusive tag might be the way to go. I don’t see a lot of good options out there as far as teams ready to win who would pay say $35/38 million. Chargers? I think it is too rich for New England. Tampa? If Dak wants top dollar he might have to be willing to lose in a small market for it.
