Is Byron Jones really worth his new contract coming?

Byron is a very good player. The only thing missing is he doesnt get the turnovers. He will be tough to replace because he could lock down a teams best WR or a top TE like Ertz most of the game. I'm sure the Eagles will be happy he is gone.

Too bad we can’t afford to pay a very good corner which is a lot harder to come by, especially right out of college, because we decided to over pay for the most expendable position on the field who is directly reliant on the 5 people in front of him.

Good job Jerry.

Sure glad you got tired of attacking Dak and now switching to Jones. Cooper next or did I miss your thread on him?
So glad your not in charge of the Cowboys Cap situation.
You would sign every Cowboy, every contract... The Cowboys would be the most roster stable team in the entire league.

I have no idea what the new cap is going to be like under the new CBA. I have no idea how to handle it even if I did. But I know Stephen does.

Did Byron get some deal I'm unaware of, or is this just speculation?

Speculation at this point.

But he will get signed to 16-18 million per by around this time tomorrow

They're actually all worth what they get paid if someone is willing to pay you that amount. It's up to the team to decide if they are worth it to them. The Cowboys may not think Byron is worth 16-18 Mil, but if the Cowboys pass and he gets that elsewhere, yeah, that's what he was worth to keep. The thing is, do some of these players over estimate their value? That's the key. No team wants to pay a player something he wouldn't get elsewhere.

No. But most FA's aren't. Just like Dak, he is the next one to get paid and that's just the way FA works.
I know.

And the Cowboys know it.

Just the risk/reward of the situation.

The system just prohibits dynasties or retaining winning for long.

My take:

#1: By any metric you want to use, Jones has been excellent since switching back to corner. I haven't heard any statistic disputing that aside from picks.

#2: If Byron's role is "limited" to taking a guy like Julio Jones out of the game? I'm fine with that. Byron can hang with any boundary wideout in the game athletically.

#3: He actually plays receivers very closely, he just doesn't get his head around and has stone hands. At this point, that's not going to change. The anticipation for it and feel just isn't there (more on that later).

#4: Jones was one of the least targeted corners in the entire league. He got thrown at 10 fewer times than DPOY Stephon Gimore. Part of that was because there were easier pickings elsewhere, but Jones was still elite; it's not like he was bad and Chido was just worse. If Byron struggled in coverage, he'd still get picked on whenever he happened to cover the play's first read.

#5: I'd say that's fair. To me, Jones is a press-man only corner. Dude has no feel for zones or space. He's a freak-among-freaks athlete, intelligent, tough, but at his core, I think he's a track guy playing football. If you put him in press and say "cover this guy", he can run with anyone and he's smart enough to understand their route stems, etc and predict their breaks. In that scheme, he's an excellent player. But when we put him at FS and said "drop to 15 yards deep and figure out what to do", he was just lost. I think Romo described that as "seeing space" - seeing how the whole field will change with time and anticipating what spaces will be open or closed, what receivers are going to separate and who will be covered. Byron just does not have the feel for that at all.

#6: Why would you blitz your best cover corner from out wide? Leave that to the slot corner lining up closer to the QB.

#7: If the set-the-market contract rumors are true, we'll get a 3rd rounder guaranteed.
Thanx for the post.

Good points and that took some time.

These are the posts I like from a knowledgable fan which I believe makes it worth reading and posting here.

I hope Jones cashes his lotto ticket soon. Whether or not he stays or goes is not for us to really worry about.

Man this off season has been so multi-directional for us fans with fires and hires and star players getting their new deals..

September needs to hurry.

Byron Jones just isn't a difference-maker, which this defense sorely needs, see the terrible take-away numbers from just last year.

All of them are worth their contracts. They bring in tons of money, they should get huge contracts.

My only concern is spending too much on a few players, as that has been shown beyond any doubt whatsoever to derail a team.

Since maneuvering w/i the salary cap is absolutely instrumental in building a team to compete for a super bowl, why would you think it's not for us to worry about? I'm really not getting that line of thinking.

Ok..

I have not said much about Jones as it appears he will be offered alot more than we can do.

But, what are we losing and why is he getting so much attention.

Let me go first..then you guys.

#1-Is Jones really that good?
I am not so sure. It appears to me watching him play..he is not that solid in Zone and his guy often runs wide open.

#2-If #1 above seems true, then is Jones pretty much a 'man on man' guy which limits his role as you can not expect him to be effective like that only. The offense will figure that out and decoy Jones out of the play to open up other WRs.

#3-If he does not grab interceptions, is it reasonable to assume he is playing off the receiver too far a majority of the time? Most intercepts will occur when a CB plays the receiver tightly to be close to where the ball is coming. Jones is not what you call a ballhawk.

#4- is it just me or is it our defense? It seems they throw less at Jones and more at Awuzie and to the TE to attack the safeties. They are easier to confuse and it results in bigger plays. Just ask Aaron Rodgers and Wentz.

#5-So given any of this, Jones had his best 2 seasons under Richard. He is gone as is Marrinelli. If he was not leaving anyway, I think he would have a backslide season for us in 2020 anyway.

#6-Since Marinnelli called the front 7 and Richard the defensive backfield calls..and neither of those guys liked to blitz..Jones NEVER blitz from CB. Crazy. Jaylon Smith is a very good LBer blitzer as is Wolf Hunter. Never really called them either.

So with Jones leaving and Wolf Hunter hurt, Lee in limbo and the rest of the LBers not starters..what now? Drafting a cover CB with 4.2 speed to blitz?

#7-Lets look on the bright side. With Jones leaving, do we not get a compensatory pick in 2021 for his loss? If so, what will that be?
You apologists must know.

So I have mixed feelings about him leaving and no mixed feelings about keeping any money he would otherwise get.

I thought his first years with us were a waste as he bounced from position to position never stabilizing the safety positions and we are still looking for that help Byron Jones was supposed to fill.

So what do you guys think about FA and Jones?

Don't say "if he will take a home discount keep him" stuff.

Other thoughts.

The Cowboys have been a bend but don't break defense which has helped Jones, however with the new D coordinator I think you're going to see more press which doesn't play well Jones. Even with his speed he has issues locking down receivers.

He single handedly ruined the 2016 season with his sorry *** coverage. I will celebrate his departure to a new team. He has absolutely no ball skills and adds nothing.

If Philly signs him to a huge contract, I'm thinking he busts.

Except for the 3 TDs he gave up in 2019.
Yeah didn't pay close attention to those honestly but i know one of them was a back shoulder throw from Tom Brady.

You can't defend a perfect pass. Also remember he was coming off surgery too.
