He is clearly the backup to Gregory

Gregory - who isn't even an NFL player at this point in time?

And who exactly was 'starting' when this was the failed setup the last time, before Quinn got here?

No but he was writing an article about underwhelming offseasons TO DATE. And to date, I don't think anyone can credibly argue we are better TODAY than we were at the start of FA.
He made this comment …

The Cowboys defense was awful before the offseason began, and they seem intent on making it even worse in 2020!

Does 1 week of free agency really reflect that they intend to make the defense worse?

One of the players the post laments the loss of (Robert Quinn) wasn't even on the team at this point last season, yet the post indicates that actions to this point are reflective of intent. To indicate that is not only false, it's illogical.

Robert "rush the passer at all costs, dang everything else" Quinn? I gotta believe they have a free agent and a draft pick in mind, at least.

The Cowboys defense was awful before the offseason began, and they seem intent on making it even worse in 2020! How about that? Two of their biggest contributors from a year ago -- pass rusher Robert Quinn and corner Byron Jones -- are gone. Sean Lee is back, despite his age and years of injury woes. They'd better hope Gerald McCoy makes a far more significant impact than he did in Carolina last year, or this thing might really crumble. Keeping Amari Cooper is nice, but wait until Dak Prescott is making $38M a year. It's going to limit the ability to do a few other things, and Jerry Jones has been paltry spending on payroll the last four years, anyway. They'd better have one helluva of a draft, and it had better lean decidedly to the defensive side of the ball. Their ability to stop anyone remains very much in question, and even all of the yards they rolled up a year ago were not enough to make them anything close to a contending team.

It's common sense. We lost more than we added to date. You don't have to be a hater or negative or anything to see that. You just have to have some common sense, a little bit of logic and the ability to read.

I suspect you lack all three of those things.

Note, he doesn't say it's doomsday. He accurately says that we will have to nail the draft to fill some of our holes (unless we add more FAs). Again, it doesn't take a lot of brain power to see that's a pretty accurate statement.
There you go with the name calling right away. Clear indication.

I don't agree with him. LVE was hurt most of last year. So was Lawrence. Crawford was out. Malik was also hurt. He's gone and we've upgraded that position. LVE if he stays healthy will improve the defense. Lawrence will be better and Crawford will be back. I don't consider losing Jones as big a blow as others. He was healthy last year and played every game and our defense was not good. Heath is gone. You've crapped on him like you've crapped on all the players. Dix is an upgrade there. Hill was a 2nd round pick and I think he'll play better this year. Jaylon gets a little better each year. I'm not surprised of your doom and gloom takes. We've all come to expect that with you. I guess you got tired of crapping on Dak and have now moved to the defense. So enough of the name calling and take a look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself "Why am I always crapping on everything Cowboys?"

We're going right back to the pre-Robert Quinn **** show at right defensive end and many fans seem to have no problem with that.

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
who said we're going back to that?

and i will point out you gave them a B+ in your "off-season grade to date" thread.

Plenty of fans here in their struggles to mitigate the loss of Robert Quinn with no replacements to date. It's being said in this very thread, have you missed it?

Yes I did. What was that? About a week ago now? I believe it was entitled "all too early" as well, was it not?

And what's happened since then? Teams around the league have been signing players to improve their teams and what has happened here since? I believe our Pro Bowl center retired.

Apparently La Confora doesn't work from home as well as other people do.

Clinton-Dix was added during that time.
I have not read any post in this thread that says we will NOT address the Quinn spot.
and if reports are true....that Dontari Poe is close to a deal....too this point I'd say this off season is a:thumbup:

IMO the biggest issue with the defense last year was teams figured out how to attack the Marinelli/Richard scheme and those two never adjusted. @xwalker pointed it out early from film review.

A subset of that was the DT play because Woods and Crawford missed a lot of time and Collins was inconsistent. Having Poe and McCoy starting is a huge improvement, so the biggest part of our Achilles Heel will be fixed.

Firing OQuinn as Special Teams Coach was the best thing to address an Achilles Heel but that's a separate thread.

What difference would it make it someone said something one way or another about replacing Quinn? How do the words typed here by fans determine things like that one way or another? Again, these are discussions and articles based on what has happened, not on hypothetical of what might yet occur. They are based on the information that we have.

I'd feel a lot better if that deal gets done as well.

But he - and we - are talking about what has happened, not what we hope might happen.

losing Frederick sucks.
no one will be Travis Frederick.
but we went thru this in '18...with Looney filling in and saw this team go 10-6...win the division and made the play-offs.
doesnt mean that will happen again.
but it is a reason for hope.
plus they drafted McGovern who played some sifnificant time at C at Penn St.

the biggest thing for me is addressing the holes left by Jones and Quinn.
justified cause for concern.

And to date, they've done little to get better. He also says they will have to draft well so he acknowledges there is way out of this.

As much as people want to reject this analysis, his commentary isn't crazy or out in left field. We've lost more talent than we've gained. We don't seem particularly active right now in the second level of FAs and we have a history of doing just this........... largely sitting out FA with a signing or two and then thinking the draft will solve our problems.

and he is assuming they DON'T have a plan...
im saying because we DON'T KNOW what we DON'T KNOW.....and with a competent coaching staff led by Mike McCarthy...lets give them a chance.
they're not done.

I'd say so much for the idea of Williams at swing tackle, if McGovern and Looney are competing at center.

Thanks, replacing those two are the biggest concerns for me as well.

But signing Poe and upgrading inside would give me a bit more optimism in that area. They may inevitably take a step back at RDE (though I hope that they would still then draft or sign someone there). But a starting group of Lawrence, McCoy, Poe, and say a rotation featuring a combination of Jackson, Jelks, Armstrong, Gregory and a rookie would help me feel a lot better.
