So you were in a coma starting in 2014 and just this second woke up? You don't think the talent level has improved since the days of starting Nick Hayden and George Selvie?
was stationed away and not as privy to details you. may have. But nothing jumps out in terms of talent . Bogging the boys article quoted by a member earlier says the cowboys were ranked 3rd since 2008 . so before McClay. But i dont see evidence McClay is special.

Is he over both collegiate prospecting and pro acquisitions, or is there someone more over that pro part?

Edit: Besides Stephen, who's simply a grinning skull with an idea to act tough on contracts.

Well, McClay was brought in after the potential disaster but turned success of the 2013 draft, notably the first round.

The one where scouts were wanting Floyd but Rod didn't want him, which lead to visible confusion in the draft room.

He has done a better job of having the draft room closer to the same page and they have done a better job of landing quality first round picks outside of Taco. Alongside getting reasonable to good starters in day 2, with some gems in day 3. Its impossible to nail every draft or expect the players to then mature and want to be great themselves.

Imo they have allowed McClay to have a decent voice in the room, as he was the leading charge on drafting LVE for example. And that started early in the offseason. The Jones's still have a lot of say and they also have given more say to coaches over the years, for better or worse. But I feel overall since McClay was promoted they have bern drafting well enough to build a good team. It's not on him that the Jones's have pet cats or are penny pinchers in free agency or take a long *** time to re-sign guys off the stage hoarding cap space early on in FA.

In all fairness, Dallas hit on some later round picks which helped salvage those otherwise disappointing drafts. Players like Lewis, Gallup, Brown, Pollard, Armstrong & Woods have all outperformed their draft position.

Since Will’s been running personnel in Dallas, the Boys have experienced some of their most successful drafts in their long and storied history.
fair enough. i think jerry enjoys making these risky moves as an equalizer. most don't pan out but he keeps them going,.

I hear a lot of praise for Will McClay and his influence on jerry and stephen when it comes to draft selections . But do we actually know how effective he has been ? The latest draft picks have not been that great ( Gregory , Taco , Trysten Hill , LVE injury history etc ) ? Does he make the final decisions anyway ? Any inside knowledge or thoughts on McClay ?

he’s done an excellent job.

not only drafting. Free agents also.

McClay had TJ Watt ranked higher on his board than Taco. That is a fact. It was Merinelli and Jones that decided to go after Taco. They passed on Watt for Taco. The Steelers are still laughing in our faces as the took Watt with the very next pick.
yes but what about this link below . seems McLay pushed for Taco ?

Another thing is that there a dozens of staff that collectively contribute to drafting a player.

Interesting. One says he wants watt and broadas says McClay was on board.

if McClay makes the board and watt is higher that gives me the answer there.

McClay gets an incomplete on defense thanks to Rod f’ing up some picks. I’d say we have had more hits than misses. Which by definition makes him above average in my mind. I know plenty of franchises that would be happy to take him.

Just be grateful he's here and drop it.

End of discussion.

Before the Taco draft, I’d have given him a high B+ or maybe even a low A-.

Starting with us taking Taco over TJ Watt, he gets a solid F- - -.

Will McClay does not make final decision. That is Jerry The Dumbo GM Jones. McClay gets the scouting reports and draft board put together. Jerry then deviates taking the risk with Gregory, Lee, Smith, LVE (all LB with prior injuries). Jones and Marinelli did their grumpy old man movie in the draft room the last 2 years.

3 out of 4 years, McClay drafted a Pro Bowler in the 1st round in Martin, Jones, and Elliott.
