That is 100% correct.

I love him as a player and think he would immediately step up and lead this defense....one which desperately needs a leader....

But they want a LOT for him. Not just a first.

I would say two firsts would probably do it.

Maybe a 1st a 3rd and Gallup.

Maybe Zack Martin and a late pick.

He isnt going to be cheap at all. Cost prohibitive in fact. They cant sell one first round pick to the fan base, who expects to contend for a WC berth this year. He is their best player.

For a single piece, one pays cap...not a team's future. Special team stars are even needed with lower picks each and every year.

Draft Xavier McKinney. Five years of quality play for an eighth the cost...
Agreed.

Love Adams but giving up a 1st rounder for a 1 year rental then you have to turn around and pay him 17 million a year........ (yeah no thanks).

Get a solid starter now for a fraction of the price and use that extra money saved to keep improving multiple defensive positions.

Cowboys only have 1 year rentals on both starting DT positions and both of there current safties. There going to need to spend money in 2021 on defense

The two defensive tackles are on 3 and 2 year contracts at present...

Adams will probably want $100m/5yr deal - if it only costed a 1st and whatever else, I would do that in a heartbeat because he’s a proven all-pro NFL safety but you still have to pay the guy.

With Cooper last year, the Cowboys are a year behind on cap management and upgrade for future talent levels.

It just flat out cant be done. It's not good business.

Let's be honest...its NOT the final piece of the puzzle on this team.

The issue with him vs. McKinney is the old Let's Make a Deal dilemma.

Adam's is a handful of cash and McKinney may be canned salmon! We don't know.

The Dallas Cowboys should go all-in to trade for all-pro Jets safety Jamal Adams this offseason. Securing Adams would be an immediate boost to the defense.
When the Dallas Cowboys were unable to finalize a trade at the deadline of this past season for New York Jets All-Pro safety Jamal Adams, there was speculation from people surrounding the organization that the topic would re-emerge in the offseason.

CowboyMaven’s Mike Fisher recently mentioned that he believes the Cowboys would be willing to offer a high draft pick in exchange for the star safety before the draft if they sense the Jets and Adams cannot reach an extension.

If the Cowboys can trade their first-round selection, the 17th overall pick, in the upcoming NFL draft for Adams, they should jump on the offer with no hesitation. The Jets originally wanted more than the Cowboys first-rounder during the season, resulting in the negotiations coming to an end. If the Jets sense they cannot reach a long-term agreement with Adams, they may be willing to lower their asking price...
They would need a Walker deal 1.02,, just too much, and this team doesn't have the ammo to even consider it.

LETS be honest, no safety is worth what the jets asked for last year. I value the position, but its not the end all be all. Adams would be the tone setter of the db group...so I would love him here, but not at the asking price.

it would set the team back years to give up premium picks for a safety. I would hold my nose I guess and give up a 2nd rounder this year, and a 2nd in 2021. NO MORE. ANYTHING MORE WOULD BE DEVASTATING TO THE NEW COACHING REGIME AND HIS PLAN. Just cannot afford to make a blunder like this, no matter how shiny and bright an object he is. ITS THE ULTIMATE TEAM SPORT...One safety isn't going to be the difference. I value the position highly, but not at the cost of the team for years to come. Jerry sometimes thinks as if this was the mid 90's again where you could afford to do that and get away with it...but one thing at least, love him or hate him, Stevie Jones won't give away the farm for 1 player. I like that. Unless its a Joe Burrow..ie a QB ...it aint worth it. Jets NEVER wanted to trade Adams and I don't think they do now. That's why the price was so ridiculous. So lets do us all a favor, forget about the "unicorn" lol...it aint gonna happen...its pie in the sky like Earl Thomas was before that. We are being played. Draft a good safety and be happy.

Take note that the 'writer' of this piece intentionally fails to get into the financial numbers of such a deal, and what paying Adams would cost. That's what fans who can't face reality often do.

exactly, would hamstring the new staff and front office for the next 2-3 years. JUST CAN'T DO IT.

exactly, would hamstring the new staff and front office for the next 2-3 years. JUST CAN'T DO IT.

Here's some financial details from a real writer:

There’s a litany of paths in these high-stakes negotiations, but here’s the best road for the heartbeat of the franchise: A three-year, fully guaranteed $54 million extension to tack on to his existing two years.

Adams is scheduled to earn $3.5 million in the fourth year of his rookie contract. The Jets will pick up the fifth-year option. Under terms of the proposed Collective Bargaining Agreement that’s on track to be voted on in the coming week or so, fifth-year options are no longer tied to draft position. Instead, a player, who has made at least two Pro Bowls in his first three seasons, will get the guaranteed amount of the franchise tag value. The tag for safeties is roughly $12.7 million.

So, Adams is set to make about $16 million in 2020 and 2021. That jumps to about $70 million over five years when you include the three-year fully guaranteed extension. The Falcons employed a similar strategy before the 2019 season by giving Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones a three-year, guaranteed $66 million extension (with $64 million guaranteed at signing) with two years left on his existing deal. Atlanta essentially moved the money in those two years to the back end of the five-year window.

So you're talking about giving up your 1st round pick this year for the 'privilege' of having to reset the safety salary market. For a strong safety at that.

Not smart, on so many levels.

Can’t keep trading draft picks for big salaries. That’s a pretty sure way to create salary cap problems.

In general, no, you can't keep doing it. We've done it once. We can get away with it again. But no, it's not something we can continue to do routinely.

Bingo!

They totally whiffed on 2017's 1st rounder. And as good as LVE is, his neck issue leaves him a question mark for 2018's 1st rounder.

2019's 1st rounder went to Amari Cooper, who quickly became a big ticket item. At some point, this team needs to get back to getting dependable, cheap labor through the draft.
