Here’s what DallasCowboys.com writers David Helman and Jonny Auping have to say about those who toss that term about around here. And I fully agree.

What is the difference between an elite quarterback and a good quarterback? Does it come down to having a signature win like a Super Bowl win? What must Dak Prescott do to move from a good quarterback to an elite quarterback? Are their specific skills that he must develop, or does he simply need to lead the Dallas Cowboys to a Super Bowl win?— MARTY MONFORTE/ENDICOTT, NY

David: If I could become the tzar of football for a day, the first thing I'd do is outlaw the word "elite" from football conversations. It's a completely subjective, borderline meaningless word that people throw around to win arguments without using facts. The truth of the matter is that quarterbacks from all over the spectrum have helped their teams win Super Bowls — and for a variety of different reasons. For all his talent and accolades, Aaron Rodgers has as many Super Bowl wins as Joe Flacco. Peyton Manning has the same number of championship rings as his little brother, and I think we'd all agree that Peyton was the much better player than Eli. Dak is a top-tier NFL quarterback, and all evidence indicates that his arrow is still pointing upward. Who on Earth can say if he'll actually deliver the championship Cowboys fans have been waiting for, but he's done enough to deserve a new contract in my opinion.

Jonny: Honestly, there are a lot of hard rules to the game of football, but anybody with a definitive list of who is or isn't "elite" just wants to sound like an expert. The line between "really good" and "elite" is thin. I don't think Patrick Mahomes became elite when he won the Super Bowl. But ultimately quarterbacks are judged by wins. I certainly wouldn't put last season's 8-8 record on Dak, but the best quarterbacks tend to manage to overcome a lot of their teammates' mistakes and pull out wins. That said, many of them acquired that attribute after some tough losses. Dak isn't on Mahomes level, and maybe he never will be. But there aren't many quarterbacks I'd confidently say could be the highest paid player on a Super Bowl team. I think Dak is that guy.

Dak is not a top tier NFL quarterback. Nor is the line between 'really good' and 'elite' thin.

These two guys are clowns. If they (or you) can't look at Mahomes and see that he's elite -- and much better than a 'really good' guy like Matt Ryan -- I don't know what to say.

This has the feel of a Dak apology thread.

No. This is a factual thread to expose THE REAL CLOWNS who toss that elite bs around trying to sound smart.
FYI. Mahomes only looked ELITE for the last 8 minutes of the super bowl. If the 49ers would’ve ran the ball instead of trying to make Garoppolo look ELITE, Mahomes would be the SB loser.
Try reading the explanations these guys gave. Instead of pushing your personal agenda.

Dak Prescott is an elite quarterback.

There was exactly one QB in the league last year who was top-5 in accuracy, and top-5 in air yards. Give you one guess who it is.

I read their explanations. They were idiotic.

Mahomes has looked elite since he stepped on the field. Find another hobby. This one is beyond you.

I feel you. But I wouldn’t say he’s ELITE. But he’s damned good.

I like the man, but I'm still Dak-nostic.
What can I say? I'm very much looking forward to seeing how he performs under some real coaching with some West Coast themes in the O.

Did he look ELITE in his last game? Or was the Niners defense elite?

Nobody has ever been elite if the requirement is that he look elite every minute of every game he plays, regardless of the D he faces. It simply doesn't follow that Mahomes isn't elite. He's looked elite since the moment he stepped onto the field in the NFL and nobody reasonably knowledgable about football would deny it unless pushing an agenda.

That will tell us a lot about his development and/or limitations.

There is no such thing as ELITE. Mahomes is a very good quarterback with a strong arm and athleticism. He also has a great coach, a great TE, and some speedsters at WR that go get the deep passes. But in all honesty SF shut the whole show down until Shannahan made the worst decisions of his career and tried to make Jimmy G look ELITE.. The rest is history.

@Outlaw Heroes. Hey Genius. Do you consider Tom Brady to be ELITE?

We'll see how he looks this season. Last year not so much.

But if your position requires you to say that the GOAT has never been elite (it does) that about says it all about the credibility of your position. Stay down. Your argument is an epic fail.

So you’re saying Brady “was elite” until last season? And if Tampa Bay is still garbage with him he’s no longer “Elite”? Is that what you’re saying? Because if you are, I wanna know what effect coaching and playing within the perfect system had on his ELITENESS??? Lol

I'm not going to further dignify your ridiculous claim. Go peddle crazy somewhere else.

(Now I've seen it all: neither the best player in the league currently nor the GOAT has ever been elite. Because...Go Dak!)
