Can someone help me out with the numbers on Zeke’s contract and how some consider it a team friendly deal? I’ve been having a discussion with a Carolina Panthers fan since I live here in North Carolina. I’m pretty busy with work so I thought asking here was quickest way to find my answer.

I think it's because it's front end loaded, so if we cut him in a year or two the ongoing Salary Cap impact won't be too great.

It’s really a four year deal because the Cowboys can get out after 2022

4 YRs $50,088,964 —- $6,700,000 Dead Cap

That’s why it’s really not nearly as bad as everyone freaked out about. After 2022, the cowboys can cut him and only owe 6.7m dead cap and move on

4 years and 50m isn’t nearly as ridiculous as it sounded when people said $90,000,000 !?$&@

Don't concern yourself with a dollar amount. As fans all we need to do is look at cap hit/dead cap.

2020 will be his 5th year option and they were able to stick some of the signing bonus to that year. So cap hit is 10.9mil.

2021 will actually be the first year of his 6 year extension at 13.7mil cap hit. They can actually cut him after this and have a 10.8 mil dead cap instead of keeping him at 16.5 mil I think it is. If not, then they definitely could just do what post #5 suggested. But it's not very friendly to Jerry's wallet.

The one thing I'm not sure about, and maybe someone else can help, is with the guaranteed pay for 2022. It says it's a 10.8 dead cap if he's cut after the 2021 season. But he'll be guaranteed 2022 if he plays 2021. Would that amount be added to the dead cap of 10.8?

A dead cap of $6.7M for a RB after four years on the contract?

@StuckMojo just go ahead and say there is absolutely nothing team friendly about the Zeke deal. It was moronic.
Outside of him getting the longest, highest AAV, most years guaranteed, and him forcing this two years before his contract expired, the Cowboys really bent him over the barrell.

I can’t remember an offseason where I’ve seen so many threads and comments with fans complaining about the contracts of our players. Christian McCafferty was just made the highest paid RB on the league off one great season and fans here applaud it but Zeke gets criticized for his deal despite consistent production his first 4 seasons.

I’m not complaining. I was actually taking up for Zeke’s contract as more team friendly with the Panthers fan. Just wanted some more info.

If he's on the roster past the 5th day of the 2021 season, then yes, his base is guaranteed for 2022 which would also be added to the dead cap calculator.
Basically, he's safe until 2023.

I think the dead cap calculator is waiting until he is on the 5th day of 2021 to update that figure for 2022. Not sure how those websites update the numbers. Via algorithms or user updates.

Ok, but what's the point of waiting if the 10.8 is never an option? That's what confused me.

If team friendly means Jerry bending over and grabbing his ankles then this is the friendliest contract I’ve ever seen.

Wasn’t sure how to take your post but anytime Zeke’s contract comes up it’s usually someone complaining about it. It’s been pretty much the theme this offseason with fans complaining about our top players contracts. It’s almost like some fans on the board would rather have a mediocre player who’s a bargain than a top high priced player. There’s fans who would rather have Pollard starting on his rookie salary. It seems like it’s all about money for some fans. They want this QB for a bargain and that RB for another bargain. There’s been complaints about Amari’s contract and that we could have replaced him with Gallop or another cheaper option. If it was up to some they wouldn’t pay anyone.

When you secretly hate on your team you need to use a vast assortment of tools to spread it without just coming right out and say you are rooting for their failure

  1. Performance - a legitimate reason to complain
  2. Contract - performance is good but I still hate. He makes too much money
  3. Personality - performance and contract are ok but he has an ego, doesn’t put the team first, tweets too much, etc
  4. Endorsements - ok, performance, contract and personality are ok but I don’t make any money and I hate it that the player has a side hustle. He’s clearly not focused on football,
  5. Mystery reasons - performance, contract, personality and endorsements aren’t problems. I just have an agenda but don’t dare speak it aloud for fear of ridicule

To cut a top contract in 4 yrs for 6.7 is team friendly since the cap has been going up 10 a year and will go up even more in next few years

Exactly. Not only that his first 4 seasons where signficantly less as than the next 4. Fans where acting like Zeke got 4 years 100 million based on the attitude and whining you hear on here

Me-explains how it isn't team friendly including multiple measures.
You- it's very team friendly, the cap has gone up and will go up.

So you didn't explain at all how it was team friendly let alone "very team friendly" lol.

No matter what the CAP is, 6.7M of dead cap after four years is a losing proposition. That's a silly statement to say it's the exact opposite haha.

Jared Goff is a QB who got paid twice as much and he can be cut after four years with a $5M dead cap on a QB much less an RB and Goff is thought of as one of the worst contracts in the league. "Very tram friendly" lol no not even a little bit.
