Serious scenario with Dalton

Let’s suppose Dak signs the tag and intends on playing the year out on the FT. Let’s also suppose Dak bets on himself once too often and suffers a season ending injury the first play of the game, but the prognosis is a full recovery to 100 percent the following year.

Now, just for the sake of this exercise let’s assume that Dalton steps into this loaded team, wins at least 12 games and goes on to win the Super Bowl, what do you do?

You can’t tag both Prescott AND Dalton. Both would be worth two firsts in a trade scenario if they are locked up under contract.

It would be far better to have Prescott under contract than not. You could tag Dalton and get a kings ransom for one or the other. And that has a real possibility of happening.

If Dalton did that and won a SB he would automatically become royalty around here and in Dallas. Cowboys would let Dak go and sign Dalton to a 3 year extension (probably wouldn't have an issue with the years because he will be 33) and then draft his future replacement in 2021 or 2022

That’s basically what the Eagles did. They were dumb enough to keep the often injured QB that didn’t win the SB for them.

Foles fit that system and much cheaper. They paid Wentz and now have caca surrounding him.

There is a whole lot of hypothetical there but in that scenario, you keep the QB with the longer future and get a "king's ransom" for the other.

It's a good question, but basically someone else tagged it... it's just Wentz vs Foles. However...

Dak is just a fourth round dink and dunk guy. The Eagles definitely felt the tug of the investment they made to acquire Wentz when it came down to their choice. Their is no similar investment in Dak. The correct play would be that hopefully (and finally) the inbred Jones clan realizes that after the second straight unheralded game manager plugs into the system and does well... that maybe, just maybe it's the system and not the player. Draft another QB and release both Dalton and Dak simultaneously into the XFL.

If this guy who could never escape the wild card round suddenly leads the team to a Super Bowl, he's going to get extended and Dak is going to walk. I'm far from a Dak hater around here, but come on.

I don't think Dalton is better than Dak at this point in his career (if he ever was) but the Cowboys are not hypothetically dumping a hypothetical Super Bowl champ who is still in his early 30s.

The Wentz situation isn't the same because he looked like an MVP candidate in only his second season after being taken in the 1st round, and really hadn't been hurt before that point so there was no history of fragility yet. Then 2018 happened, etc.

And it's not like Foles has done anything since, either.

They’d keep Dalton on a big contract for short years and tag Dak then trade prior to the draft. Maybe get a 2nd? He’d still be expecting a big payday from new team.

Edit: and if Dak can’t get any sort of tag he walks to the highest bidder.

He's under a one year, which illustrates that next season when there's some QB salaries expiring, teams will be looking for a QB.
