Starts at about 1:22, good insight on the injury too.

Quick Highlights:

-100% healthy and in the best lower body shape he’s ever been. Fully ready for camp at 250lbs with no restrictions or lingering things to monitor.

-Spent last season “trying to tackle with one arm”. Neck stinger caused stiffness and made it hard to move neck. Made it difficult be himself.

-Will be the Mike LB in new role.

-Mentioned the Saints game in terms of how his role will look. Less sideline to sideline use and more running through gaps in the front 7 to make plays. Will be relying more on McCoy and Poe to occupy blockers to let him be free to get downhill and make plays.

I’m liking it.

I've said that I thought there really were two glaring problems with last season's linebacker play compared to the previous season.

(1)...that the DTs weren't as effective in keeping the O-linemen off of our LBs... and...

(2)... there had to be something wrong with LVE that we weren't hearing about.

For the most part, he was indeed not himself.

I've thought LVE at Mike and Jaylon at Will was always the best setup. I'm glad we'll get to see it finally. The hell was Marinelli doing? How much of this defense was out of position?

It's hard to understand. LVE was essentially a Brian Urlacher starter kit and belonged at MLB from the start. Smith is a fly to the football linebacker and belonged at an outside spot, either at SLB to run with tight ends and blitz or WLB to be protected more and use his speed to shoot upfield untouched to attack the run. Then there's Sean Lee, who he tried to turn into a strongside linebacker last year until LVE couldn't go.

I think the idea was that LVE is a better player in space and Jaylon was more physical at the point of attack and on blitzes.

Sean Lee was clearly the SAM because he wasn't going to start over the other two but he is light years better than the other options.

My thing on Lee is that he was going to be a part-time player, only out there when we used three-linebacker sets. Use him at his best spot because I believe Smith has abilities that translate well to WLB or SLB. I don't think Smith is speed player, so use him where his speed is a greater asset than physicality. LVE is a long, bigger player with great size for the MLB spot and good movement skills, but not the pure speed that Smith has.

The day we drafted him I said he should have been our Mike LB. He was the only one with the size to be it. Younguns around here all said, No, we need speed at Mike not size. Put Jaylon in. Well, seeing how I used to play LB in HS, I know the stoutest LB always needs to be the Mike. He takes care of Guards and the Center and needs to be able to stuff the run inside. Speedy guys play the W & S so they can attack the ball and cover RB's and TE's. This will be LVE's best position and I am tickled that our new coaches realize this.

I wanted LVE at MLB since day one. Marinelli played most all of the defense out of position, IMO.

But I don't like the weight down to 250. He was 256 at the combine. He's a guy with the length and athleticism to get *bigger*, not smaller, particularly if they're putting him at MLB.

But as for "no lingering things", neck surgery is neck surgery. Didn't they fuse two disks? That's not an *improvement* in the design of Human 1.0. That's a kluge. I expect it shortens his career in the end, but it is what it is. Sad.

People seriously said you need speed at MLB, and wanted Jaylon there? Ugh. Obviously you want the fast guys outside to cut off the edge.

Lee was an All Pro at WLB. He's not that guy anymore, but that's still likely his best position. LVE at MLB. Smith at SLB.
