Valid point. Gregory has been out of the game for a long time. Smith has been out of the game for a long, long, long, long time.

But Crawford is a credible starter who every now and then makes a significant play--more typically a tackle for loss than a sack, but a significant play nonetheless. I'm content we can get by with him for some number of games anyhow.

He does decent work inside at defensive tackle. That's where those few sacks come from. He's a liability at RDE. While other teams have quality pass rushers there, the Cowboys are playing with one armed tied behind their back whenever Crawford is lined up there. It's like playing 10 on 11.

If Crawford starts at RDE despite Gregory and Smith being on the roster, they might as well cut both of them on the spot. Or have them inactive because they would be useless. I can't imagine a scenario where Gregory wouldn't start over Crawford. Even with a high ankle sprain while being high.

Honestly, can't see two guys who haven't played a down in years coming in and being game #1 starters. And especially so if the training camp and preseason get truncated to any degree.

So, if you're one who thinks we can't get by with Crawford for the first, say, month of the season at DE, then seems to me, your vote has to go to that position.

Even worst case, QB is going to be in the hands of someone who's won a lot of games in the league. Me, I'm mainly concerned about positions where our #1 guy at a position hasn't actually been the #1 guy in the past such that anyone should feel very content with him being the #1 guy.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see how right or wrong you are. I think you ought to get ready to eat some crow over your comments.

I will just wait and see during TC.
At first thought, TE, S, RDE ? I still think we need more LB's for TC. How will CB's do, swing Tackle, LG, C ?

Way too many questions, but they seemed to try to cover each situation the best they could for now. Can't fix it all.

So I will wait until TC, see how each position works out.

TE and DE concern me the most. I think we have enough talent safety to resolve our past problems. Linebacker and specifically, LDE's injury vulnerability to his neck is another concern that bears watching. Sean Lee is yet another LB that has been injury prone in the past. Hopefully, Tyron Smith's injuries won't continue to persist as they have in recent years.

In saying "I can't see it," doesn't mean that it won't happen. It could happen. I'm not deity and try to never pretend that I am.

But from my mere mortal position and considering how these things have played out in the past with guys coming back after significant time away... and has anyone ever come back to play after almost 5 seasons away?...

I just can't see it happening. Would love to see it happen, though, somewhat obviously.

We actually have some dept at defensive end and safety, with Auwzie moving over. The QB position is a question mark, but only because Dak hasn't been re-signed yet. We also have some good dept on our offensive line. So there are a couple of positions that we have dept at, like CB, but we just have to figure out whose starting.

So the spot that is concerning to me is TE. Can Jarwin stay healthy? If not, then who do we have? And that's one of the reasons I'd like to see Shultz moved to fullback, so we can add another TE to the gameday roster. We don't need both Shultz and Olawale, IMO.

With the loss of Quinn the pass rush concerns me. The lack of a pass rush can create a lot of problems especially for your secondary.

 Just hold to your convictions and be prepared to be right or wrong. You don't see it happening, enough said.

I would've taken the Texas A&M guy in the 6th round if he was on the board.

I was with you on that one, fwiw.

But mainly because he seems to be an actual weapon there, whereas most punters are mostly like any other punter. Chris Jones has been a weapon in the past, but like many of us have noted, he's fallen off some. For now, I'll assume Fassel has assessed the situation, and that he's content that Jones is capable of a bounce back year, mainly because I would have thought they would have signed a UDFA if the new ST coach felt vulnerable there.

For me, it's TE.

First, because while Jarwin's receiving has been everything anyone could have hoped to see develop back-when (iirc) he was given the largest signing bonus in his class of undrafted free agents. But that, on its own, doesn't qualify a player to be a starting TE. It's admittedly a very anecdotal measure, but the fact that I've never watched a Cowboys game these last two years that he's been getting playing time, and heard him praised for a single block, but otoh, have heard him called out for missing a block... that makes me nervous.
.
You're right that Jarwin isn't a good blocker. It's pretty well documented even in limited snaps.

But this team is going to be throwing. A lot. And he's a positive as a receiver at the position.

Schultz/Bell can fight over scraps when it comes to obvious running situations.

Quite frankly the entire defensive side of the ball worries me
