Baseball is going to be starting up next month. The NBA is probably going to be shortly after. There is no basis for the NFL somehow not starting up. Something would have to change in the status quo for the NFL to not open up even in September and something very drastic would have to change for it not to open up at all.

I never said the NFL wouldn’t be starting up. What I’m saying is it’s not up to the league, it’s up to the governing bodies when they start up and how they’re allowed to proceed. How the league is allowed to proceed depends on what the situation is like from month to month. Things could change drastically once the fall and winter arrives. Everything could end up shut down again. This is a week to week, month-to-month situation we’re dealing with. You can pretend to think you know exactly what’s going to happen in the coming weeks and months but you don’t.

I keep seeing posts about him holding out or waiting until the very last minute to sign the tag in September and show up for work and that is ridiculous.

Let's start with what we know about him. The number one characteristic, and one even his detractors can agree with, is leadership. He is not going to let his teammates down. This is all business now. This will have 0 effect on his ability or desire to lead his team.

He has plenty of time to sign the tag because there is nothing happening right now. He's not the one that keeps trying to get a longer than 4 year contract. He has never, never, nor has his agent, said he is not signing the tag and reporting to work.

If he and his agent had ever considered a hold out, which I don't believe they did, that has changed. The situation has changed and with the unemployment continuing to climb, he and his agent know very well how a guy holding out with 31.4M sitting there, along with the endorsements, is going to play. He would be the most despised pro athlete in the world. Think those companies would keep him? Think again. The mood in this country is sour and we're just looking for someone to take it out on.

Throughout this entire ordeal, dating back to last off season, Prescott has handled himself well, taking care not to say the wrong things. These leaks? Not coming from his camp.

The money will get settled, either he will play for the tag or he will sign a 4 year extension, the standard QB contract over the last several years. He will be ready to go to work with his new coaching staff, installing a new offense, and all of this will fade.....until he makes the first mistake, then the Dakaters will have another go at him. But at least that will be about the actual game.

Dak Prescott was never planning on not being the Dallas Cowboys QB1 come the first game of the season. The FO was never planning on him not being that. Too many have gotten themselves all twisted up in the business that is really none of our business.

If NFL ball is played, Dak Prescott will be there, like it or not. He was never planning on being anywhere else.
Good post!

For those who think he might “hold out”, it doesn’t really work that way.

If there is a training camp, and that’s still an “if”, any player not under contract is not allowed to be involved in team activities. Those are the rules.

He’s not under contract.

He can’t hold out

This is not like Zeke or Emmitt

It also runs the risk of ruining the Cowboys season which is his leverage. As was Zeke's. As much as people want management to spite Dak and roll with Dalton, there's no way in Hades management wants to actually roll with Dalton. So there's motivation on both sides to get a deal done. That's why it will get done.

Is Dalton + 30mil < Dak?

I'm not so sure about that.

Especially since it's not just the money for one year, it's guaranteeing 100mil+.

You have some misleading information in here. Wilson's, Goff's and Wentz's extensions were four years but also included the final year of their existing contract. Putting them under contract for 5 years at the time of signing. This would not be the case for Dak.

Of course he is. It would be career suicide if he didn't.

Andy Dalton is every bit the quarterback Dak is. There's no way he can afford to let Dalton start the season as the starter. Dak had better learn the offense asap.

McCarthy literally ignores him. He doesn't care if Dalton or Dak starts. Dak had better establish that relationship quickly before big Mike tells Jerry "don't worry about him, we'll be alright." Honestly, I think Dalton can run McCarthy's offense better than Dak can all day.

The whole division will celebrate if Dallas signs him long term.

Is it worth potentially ruining the season and then maybe having to deal with this next season as well? Then if not Dak you have to find a new guy all over again. How many years does this team's core have for all that to play out? Gotta pay for security if you don't want to sweat over who's going to be the QB and if you draft a guy you better hope he's not Paxton Lynch or any window is done. If, if, if, versus a known who could even improve. The team's going to play the odds and pay Dak. It's the best chance.

There are at least 5 teams currently paying their QB 30 million or over. I guess you were just the only poster dumb enough to realize that?

He actually said pay "him" not other QBs. He didn't say we are the only team dumb enough to pay a QB $30mil... he said we are the only one dumb enough to pay Dak $30mil.

Although, I believe there are a few that are dumb enough.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. A holdout by any other name would smell as bad.

When do they get another bite of the pie?

it’s you who are misunderstanding or providing misleading information.

With your logic, Dak might as well argue that 2019 should be included as part of his extension.

thise guys got a massive chunk of money in year four of their career. Dak did not.

I think he gets signed before or on the deadline. JJ will make one last offer or Dak will sign the 4 year deal offered. JJ wanted 5 and Daks agent wanted 3 so he could rush back to the table after the scale moves up to 40+ a year. Daks agent has to make up for the money he lost by not signing the deal last season. I think he turned down 32 or 33 a year last year.

But they aren't paying an 8-8 quarterback that throws the ball into the ground on 4th down.
Romo got paid and he went 3 straight years of 8-8 and threw it to the other team. Cousins got paid and look at his record in Washington. Brees got paid and went 7-9 for 3 straight seasons......... yes teams pay QBs

This myth that Dak doesn't win games but it's the team and when they lose it's all Dak is foolish. Anybody thinking that is actually straight up fool and should lose and ability to talk football because they are a clown.

Has there been times where somebody made a play to help win that wasn't Dak........yes. Has there been times when Dak made plays to win the game.....yes. Anybody that argues the difference is biased or just a hater. In fact, they lose any credibility on the subject.

It’s a team game. Not every team can have a QB that can win it by themselves. Everyone expects us to have a brady. They are once in a blue moon player. Now that we have a descent HC I will be interested in how much better we can look. We had a HC that hit his ceiling years ago and his scheme was stuck in the 90’s, we got out coached in most all playoff games.

The weakest link is clearly not the QB though. The only QB with more yards than Dak last year threw 19 more interceptions (no wonder he isnt starting). They were the best overall offense in football despite leading the league in drops and Elliot having a down year. I think the only game I was disappointed in Dak was against the Eagles where his shoulder was messed up, but they could not start Rush because Dak with 1 arm is better than Rush.
I would say his play against New England wasn't good at all. I think the glove issue and weather was a part of it but no excuses for that game. Dak has to play better in games like that.

He threw a great pass to Beez against the giants to win the game. Even the commentators were saying what a great pass it was. And Beez made a great catch. People either like Dak or hate him. They look for reasons or stats to back up there narrative.

I don't even think Brady can win games by himself. You can get way with it somewhat in basketball but football has too many players.

Reason i say not even Brady is because he has had plenty of help plus coaches that know how to gameplan and put players in positions to succeed.

https://www.nfl.com/news/franchise-tag-primer-teams-can-start-tagging-players-0ap3000001018213

Tagged players have until 4 p.m. ET on July 15 to negotiate a multiyear contract with the team. After July 15, the player may sign only a one-year contract with his club for the 2019 season, and the deal cannot be extended until after the team's last regular-season game.

Players may sign the tender at any point after officially being tagged. Until the tender is inked, the team can rescind the franchise or transition tag. Once the sheet is signed, the player's salary is guaranteed for that season. If a player does not sign the tender, they remain without a contract, and therefore are not subject to fine schedules for skipping offseason workouts... A player who has not signed the tender can also not be traded.

**************

Not saying Prescott will not sign his tender. Just saying it is an option for him.
Reading between the lines of the NFL's stated policy can be tricky, and needs clarification.
If a tagged player does not sign a multi year extension or the tender before 4 p.m. ET on July 15, but signs afterward:
1. Is the one year contract for the tagged amount or something else?
2. Can he be traded at any time after signing the one year contract or is he bound to that team until after the last regular season game?
3. Does the last regular season game include the playoffs?
I should have been a lawyer. :muttley:

And that was on the run to his left. That was an amazing throw that not many QBs can do

He has had plenty of games he played poor. So did Romo.
No argument here. I defend Dak from stupidity but I'm also honest and at times Dak has had some bad performances. That one against Denver was really bad as well.
