The front office has generally done a great job in not wasting dead money on players over the past four seasons compared with the ten years beforehand. That long term strategy and cap management should include the QB position.

The real question is why tag Dak?

30m is a lot of money for someone who more than likely isnt going to be with the team much longer and isnt a clear upgrade on what's already on the roster.

If Dak were a UFA from another team, would you sign him on a 1 year 30m deal? I think deep down we all know the answer.

I agree.

It's not as if we would be getting Mahomes, Wilson or Rodgers for a season in win now mode.

There's even an argument that Dak Prescott has been the dreaded progress stopper.

I suppose:

1) JJ Hopes that some consensus be found.
2) JJ likes Dak - hence not spending the money for Dak's Tag and not drafting a QB in the draft.
3) We get Dak for one more 'contract season' and hope the defence holds up ….and have a successful 2020
4) As JJ had hoped to sign Dak and now there's little the money can be spent on.

I think everyone here should go into work and ask for a pay cut. And tell them you are being team friendly. Then go tell your family why you would do a job for less than market value.

Its more like going into work agreeing to get my money, and offering to take it over a longer period....I help the company, the company helps me.

Dumbest thing Dallas did was to give Dak an extra $5m or so and the exclusive tag. Were they seriously worried about some team offering MORE than $35m AND be willing to give up two first round picks?

They were trying to be respectful of Dak and it blew up in their face. Lots of people here said at the time the right call was to give him the non-exclusive tag. That looks like the right decision right now.

They were right not to go that direction. Remember they also have 50 other men in the locker room looking at the situation. The team obviously doesn't want the negotiation going in a negative direction. They want the player here and even if they didn't. If they go that direction the other 50 guys are taking notes.

I would have given him the transition tag to allow the market to set the price; however, that could have resulted in a no show. If he's dug in on what he wants then he most likely would have looked at that as an insult and a gesture of "no faith".

I do not have another option at QB because I do not fault him for not achieving more as a team. I think he's good enough to take the team to the Big Dance but the D has not been good enough and in the playoffs, D's have to at least be opportunistic.

This is all about right now and in the very near future, it's not a lifetime commitment and a 4 year deal will give them time to explore his successor because in 4 years, he isn't going to want less.

Good teams plan their transition to another QB, GB and SF both did that successfully as has KC. NE tried to set it up so they could trade their QB.

The Cowboys management creates these situations and puts themselves in the corner consistently. Hard for anyone here to have an option with them running the show.

King, is this a reference to Dak? If so, he's never took a pay cut, that I am aware of.

I'll take the Dalton bet. I don't think Dalton gets $35mil, even if we win a playoff win with him at QB.

More of Dak's career being ahead of him doesn't matter to *us* if he prefers to do the Kirk Cousins and leave.

Dak refused a fat contract last year on a 2mil, 1year deal.
Why wouldn't he let it roll again *this year* on a 30mil, 1 year deal?
Why wouldn't he let it roll again *next year* on a 37mil, 1 year deal?

See the pattern? The deals get better every year, making it less likely he'll take them. It's reasonable to conclude he's headed for free agency.

If we can't get a deal done this year and he ends up on the tag, trade him while we can and move on. This year is our best chance for that, as we have an experienced starting QB to take over.
If Dalton won a super bowl for us, he MIGHT get 25.

50 other players were taking notes on the Zeke negotiation and what they wrote down was that Jerry caves when under pressure. That probably directly lead to this situation.

If the Cowboys just give everyone what they want, players will ask for more and more until the team can barely put a team on the field due to cap constraints.
