Aldon Smith hasn't played football since Nov 2015. Penciling him in as the starting RDE is kind of risky at this point, especially when you have options in FA that mitigates that risk.

It's pretty amazing how many people think Smith is just going to hit the ground running after not having played in a NFL game in over 4.5 years.
Its not about what I think. Its about what this organization has showed us. They've had plenty of opportunities to address that position and they addressed it with Smith. That's not us fans saying Smith will hit the ground running that's this organization. They didn't address the position in the draft or in free agency aside from Smith.

I simply don’t understand the woody some of y’all have for clowney

Crawford is cheaper and probably better

never I has one athlete made so much cash based on 1 play

If we are honest about Clowney....he's managed to make a career off of an impressive tackle and combine. Props to him. I have nothing against him for milking it. But fans and GM's/owners have to be smart about what he is.

Are we really talking about a 27 year old with 6 years in the league in terms of ceiling?
He’s also never lived up to the hype
He’s good but he’s been paid to be great
I’m sure a one year deal would be the last thing a 27 yr old player would want but may be all he can get
The fact he’s still out there shows me he’s never been what he was thought to be
I wouldnt mind him one year because he good against run a a decent pass rusher
But for him to take a one year deal I think it’s too soon for him to do that

I believe it's extremely doubtful that the Cowboys sign Clowney, or anyone else, to a $16 million contract. Stephen might have a coronary just to think of it. :omg:

You're putting it mild........bluntly speaking, it's not happening. Any fans thinking otherwise are daydreaming, misguided, or both.

He's not getting it and he knows it. Which is why he is asking for less now from what he initially wanted at the beginning of the off season

No he apparently doesn't know it... That is why he is still unsigned and from reports will stay that way for awhile.

Report: NFL teams 'done' negotiating with Jadeveon Clowney

Three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jadeveon Clowney went into free agency expecting NFL teams to shower him with market-setting contract offers.

Now, with training camp just a month away, Clowney remains a free agent and it seems NFL clubs have had enough in negotiating with him.

Clowney reportedly expected to be signed by an NFL contender by now, with a deal worth at least $20 million per season. Instead, he is waiting and hoping for a market that never showed strong interest in him to suddenly change.

Organizations have spent several months talking to Clowney’s agent, Bus Cook, in an attempt to bring down the contract demands. Clowney, reportedly, isn’t willing to budge. That has reportedly driven multiple teams to the point of giving up.

“I’ve talked to multiple teams that have done the dance with Bus Cook, Clowney’s agent, and they’re tired of it,” reports Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports. “… Teams are done, they’re just done. Like, ‘All right, man. Whatever. You know what our stance is, you know what our numbers are. We’re moving on'”

In fact, according to Robinson, front offices around the league have reportedly sent a message to Clowney through his agent: Until he decides to accept that he isn’t worth the number he is seeking, no one will be calling him...

I would rather have kept Quinn at 14 Mil per year than sign Clowney at 17-18. I don't think the Cowboys are looking to invest in another defensive lineman like that at this moment. And I don't think Clowney is looking for a one year deal.

Releasing Crawford would free up $8 million in cap space.

That freed up money should allow for enough cap space to sign Clowney to a 1 year prove it deal at $16 million (it is being reported he turned down a $15 million one year deal with the Browns) since he remains a free agent late into the offseason.

In my view, this move has a few benefits:

1) Clowney is a better player than Crawford and has a much higher ceiling.

Clowney has 32 sacks in his 6 years in the NFL and that is including his rookie year where it was cut short to only 4 games because of injury. Since then, Clowney has missed a total of 9 games in 5 seasons.

Crawford, on the other hand, has had 23 sacks in 8 seasons. That does include the 2013 season where he was IRd for an ACL injury he suffered in training camp. He remained healthy after that, but he only played 4 games last season after having another injury that brought his season to an end.

2) Clowney has better position flexibility than Crawford does. Clowney can playe DE or move inside if needed. Crawford is a better 3T than a DE, which is where he is expected to play a majority of the time.

3) Signing Clowney to a 1 year deal will make him want to play at a high level at all times and tough out injuries.

4) Clowney is only 27 and Crawford is 30. Clowney is more apt to have a big year, which would improve his market dramatically next year. We wouldn't be able to sign him, but he would yield us a 3rd round comp pick in 2022.

Bring in Clowney and say goodbye to Crawford.
you would make that move if you were a superbowl contender. Although we have the roster, but new coach, new scheme, etc. and no coach having ever won a superbowl with a new team in their first year, makes the probability very very small, so spending another 8 mill for clowney (who is injury prone and under performer), will probably not get us to the superbowl. although we are playing the numbers game by the number of players we are throwing at RDE, the DB is a much bigger issue.....

I wouldn't be surprised to see Crawford cut, in fact many won't. I think at this point he is insurance. lets see who comes out of camp and stands out, subsequently he is going to be cut.

I do think picking up Griffin will be a smart move. He can give Smith and maybe even Gregory time to get back into FOOTBALL shape. I am really rooting for Smith, but I think we'd be crazy to expect him to be in 2015 shape immediately. Plus, Griffin brings maturity to the group of newcomers, which I think will help.

No, it sounds like his best offer has been a 1 year 15 million with the Browns.

would clowney prefer to play for the browns , or the cowboys ! lol I think he would be excited to come here, but going to cleveland
would be just doing a job.
I imagine jones boys still are counting on gregory which is a joke .
Clowney is someone you could move around, so the offense never knows where he will line up.
