This thread's pretty straightforward. Are there any objects you collect as a hobby, sentimentally, unintentionally, etc.?

  • If so, what do you collect?
  • How did you start collecting?
  • How many do you have?
  • How much have you spent on your prized possessions?
  • Or how have you earned them?

All stories are welcomed.

The only rule is this is a no-shame thread. If you don't like someones collection just don't comment.

I'll go first...

I collect Pocket Knives.

Growing up, my dad had a lot of slip-joint gentleman's knives, and of course I wanted to be just like him so I wanted one too.

He gave me my first pocket knife when I was probably 7 or 8 and it was just some off brand keychain folder with spring scissors and a file.

It was basically a victorinox classic swiss army rip-off-- one of my Dad's old knives he didn't carry.

It was dull as hell which is probably why he let me have it, but I carried that thing everywhere.

Over the years I got a few more from him and on my own, but I didn't really start collecting folders until I was in my mid twenties.

Current total pocket/folding knives: 41
Current Value: Roughly $5K
Total Spent Lifetime: Unknown; sold and traded a few.
Current Favorite: Spyderco Para 3 Lightweight

I don't have that dull swiss army knock off anymore. But I did buy one just like it that I keep on my keychain once I became a dad.

I'll probably give it to my son when he turns 7 or 8.

Me and the wife get a refrigerator magnet from each state that we have been to together. I think we currently have 36. I have been to a few more states than her but no magnets for those yet until we both go.

I also get a shot glass from every scuba diving destination that I went to. I started when I was sixteen in the Caymans(first open water dive) and sit at 17 right now, most of which are islands.

French and German vocabulary. Those are my two foreign languages that I speak, so I'm always finding new words that I didn't know before. I keep them all in a flash card program on my PC and on my Android and study them whenever I'm waiting on a phone call or at a doctors office or whatever.

The cool thing about collecting words is that they're all free.

I used to collect Cowboys gear and autographs. Though I ended up selling it all years ago. It was just taking up too much space and just didn't provide really any value. (for me anyway)

Now, I don't collect as much as I just have. I have like seven guitars, but I don't collect them. They each have their own use / sound. I have two guitar amps, a nice tube one for the house and and small solid state one to take with me.

I have several ham radios. I got them as I upgraded to better radios or more portable radios and not necessarily because I collect them. I should sell some of them.

The only thing that I have that I would say I actually do "collect" is obelisk. I've always had a fascination with them.

I have several pocket knifes too. I don't collect them though. I just have my old ones and I have all of my grandfather's old pocket knifes as he gave them all to me a few years before he passed away. I keep them because they were his and he was basically my father figure growing up since my father was away in the Navy most of the time.

I usually collect coins from various countries I've gone too, but it's not very organized or disciplined.
Also, I used to collect the ticket stubs to all the concerts and /or sporting events that I attended. But now so many are digital, that's come to an end as well.

Oh well.

And do you do a shot out of the shot glass first?

I always thought foreign currency was cool. I thought I would collect more as I travel, but never did.

Shot? Absolutely except the first one, parents were there

I’ll name a few states that I haven’t been to that are notable to me:

N/S Dakota, Alaska, Delaware and Rhode Island just to name a few. The others are scattered throughout the Midwest and North. Oh, forgot Utah, need to go see that place

I play blues music and then from blues rock to heavy metal and all in between.

An obelisk is well. The Washington Monument is an Obelisk, but you see them a lot in cemeteries and ancient Egypt.

DV0Le8.jpg

Obviously, I collect much smaller ones than the Washington Monument. :) I have ones made of solid flawless crystal, ones made out of obsidian, wood, marble, etc. From 4" high to some that are closer to 18" tall.

I used to have a lamp table that the base up to the table top was an obelisk. The table top was quarts, but my kids broke it. :(

Oh, I also collect perfectly round polished stone or crystal balls, though I only have a few of them at this point.

as a kid I collected coins, football cards (all cowboys cards were separated from the rest), pokemon cards. I had a bunch of other hobbies, but as far as a collections this is what I tried keeping. I haven't purchased any football cards for around 20 years since so the cards I have are still the ones from when I was a kid. I got started into football cards in the 3rd grade in New Orleans where one of my teachers would reward each student in the last class a pack of cards if we did well overall as a whole. I remember they were action packed cards with some of the limited cards having a 24k gold vertical banner. I traded many many of my cards for someones gold Aikman, I had a gold too but can't remember the player (was probably rick mirer or some mess).

This is the first chase card I ever traded for and led to the start of a small collection of cards: 1995 Action Packed Aikman 24k
1995-Troy-Aikman-Action-Packed-Rookie-Stars.jpg

As a kid with hardly any money any time we made a trip to the card store or mall I'd go straight to the card kiosks or sporting stores and spend the $6-$7 I had saved for who knows how long on some of the more expensive packs I could afford (less cards per pack) thinking that I'd somehow get some ultra rare lottery winning card.

This will also be considered a small collection, but I kept my nitro r/c cars from when I was a teen (hpi nitro rs4 fully modified, hpi nitro savage x fully modified) along with their old FM radios and receivers and just last year got the itch to buy more kits to build (got a 1/10 xray t4 and 1/10 xray xt2. I don't drive these as much as I'd like, but I don't ever plan on getting rid of them. They're just nice pieces to build and look at.

I'd like to consider my two "real" cars as part of another collection as I hope to keep them forever: 05 Honda S2000 and 06 Acura RSX Type S. Both are stick shift and both, to me, represent what cars should be (reliable, fun, sporty). I am not a fan at all of 99% of modern cars, the ones I am are well beyond my price range. My dad owned a 87 GN and I know he's always talked about wanting another, my favorite would be a 97-02 Viper GTS. I'd like to be able to add the Viper to the collection before every year goes by and I miss out on it. A 97-02 NSX (6 speed model with flip-up headlights) would be nice, but their prices have spiked recently so that's out of the question lol.

It was just a fantastic car. The gear box is so beautifully done. I kept it mostly stock, but put an intake on it that really let the iVTEC scream. It truly felt like a little luxury sports car that was a hidden gem.

I loved that car so much. And then it got stolen.

I collect tattoos? Not joking.

There are some artists I’ve travelled across the country to get their work. I follow lots of different artists and styles. Trying to get appointments with a lot of them can be almost impossible and a mixture of luck and somewhat of a game. I also go to tattoo conventions, always on the lookout for an unknown artist that is great but hasn’t been discovered by the masses thus making them cheaper and easier to get a tattoo from. I’ve entered a couple of my tattoos in competitions and love talking to about them to other tattoo collectors/enthusiasts or anyone who is curious.

Believe it or not, tattoo collecting is a real thing and I’m bush league compared to most. Although there are some tattoos artists whose work I can recognize easily, I’m not nearly as educated or as “tattooed” as the more serious people who travel the world. Unfortunately it’s not a cheap “hobby”, I don’t regret a single tattoo but I don’t like to think of how much I’ve spent, lol. It’s obviously not an monetary “investment” like some collectibles but oh well, I enjoy it for what it is, not to make money.
