I am tired to waiting for Gregory to breakout. I will have to see it for a period of time before I believe it.

Right.
I joked in a few responses above. But need to see it on the field. And see him have a complete season and off season without any failed test.
Supposedly the new CBA says failed test, can't be suspended. However, I think there are stipulations for those repeat offenders, already suspended. But not 100% sure of that. Just remember from before the CBA was signed, there was talk about that. May or may not have passed.

Really? This is based on what? Gregory played that season after a suspension. He did not have a normal camp. He took time getting into game shape. By the end of the season he was the best DL on the team. Coming out he was thought to be a top 5 talent. Talent wise he is the best DE they have.

He harassed TB's OL and Winston what seemed like the entire game. Creating a fumble that put the game away, when Jaylon scooped it up and sped to the end zone.
That was a glimpse of what could be.

Gregory would be wayyyyy down my list of candidates.

Firstly, I just don't believe he has been that focused on getting back to the game.
If he hasn't then chances are good he is behind in many areas mentally and physically.
Secondly, even when he came back before he was rusty then slow to get going.
I'd love to see what a 2nd consecutive year of Gregory looks like but it may take that to see him actually break out.

My Candidates:
Blake Jarwin - Expanded targets and focus in game planning like means big things in passing game.
Chido - Raw talent with experience meets opportunity.
Aldon Smith - Gregory-like but singularly focused on a return.
Devin Smith - If the team can move beyond what Devin brings in special teams and just let him play that WR4 role he can put up legit numbers.

The 6 sacks we got in 2018 from Gregory after his year long suspension is what we'll likely get again in 2020....if we're lucky IMO.
There's no reason to project anything more than that from him this year, especially with only 2 preseason games for him to knock the rust off.
I'm not going to predict a breakout season in 2020 for a player, that missed all but two games in 2016, all of 2017 and all of 2019.

They are taking there time. I assumed after the rule change he would be reinstated. Guessing the rule will be retroactive..
I hope you are right. I am pulling for Randy. I think he can help the Cowboys but I am more concern about his well-being most of all.

oh, I don't disagree. quinn was down right awful agains the run...Gregory maybe better than him, but better than quinn doesn't make him good....he was very average to below average against the run, most often because he didn't follow his assignments and was too aggressive in trying to pass rush, and would get washout to the outside giving up inside lanes.

That is not true. I just re-watched Gregory's snaps from 6 games in 2018. He was very good against the run.

I don't know where the narrative that Gregory was not good against the run came from.

Obviously with any player there were a couple of ugly snaps for Gregory but the vast majority of his snaps vs the run were very good.

Gregory has an amazing ability at his size to take on and shed blocks and to get push on OLinemen.

Fans often don't watch with an understanding of the scheme and player assignments.

In 2013 when Kiffin/Marinelli came to the Cowboys, fans thought DWare had fallen off a cliff against the run.

In reality, in the Marinelli defensive scheme, the RDE often goes inside abandoning outside run contain. It's in the play call.

It is generally the LB behind the RDE that is required to play outside contain when the RDE goes inside.

Unfortunately, like everything in the Marinelli scheme, it's very predictable based on the alignment of the DTs/LBs/SS and down/distance.

In the Marinelli scheme, the requirements are different at LDE. The LDE generally plays a tighter split and generally does not have a LB specifically paired with him where they take inside/outside or outside/inside.

The Seahawks years ago played a similar style and took it to an extreme with Avril at RDE and LB Bruce Irving often playing RDE on passing downs. They had 330 pound Red Bryant at LDE.

He has to actually be on the field. If reinstated this could be his first time we get to see him for a entire season. He will be in rotation.

Gregory was not suspended for all of the 2018 season...

Good God, how long has Gregory been in the league. I'll go look it up but it FEELS like we've been talking about this dude for 5 or 6 years already...of which he's played what? 16 games altogether?

Gregory has played 28 regular season games and 2 or 3 possible playoff games.

He does not get paid when he is suspended and he does not get time towards free agency if he is suspending for a majority of the season.

Until i finally hear about Gregory being officially reinstated, ..i'm not projecting him to even being back into the NFL, much less being a break out favoite.

- i don't understand Goodell already giving Alden Smith a clean slate approval with a past record that
included trouble with law enforcement, DUI and domestic abuse,.... but yet Gregory who has had no
such documented record such as arrest, ..has to wait this long before a couple of weeks before camp opens to
get his reinstatement approval.

- i was awaiting something " exclusive" from Mike Fisher this morning on Gregory, and got nada.
while just getting another opinion say from Chill ( Clarence Hill) that he doesn't think Randy is coming back.
i have to be assured that there has not been a change of heart with Gregory in terms of him being
determined to play again and if he is of fit mind to resume his career.

- i;d like to know that on HIS side of the fence, its still a clear path to go ..vs Goodell sitting around twiggling his fingers to making everyone sweating it out.

- We will definitely know something is wrong if he is not approved just right before camp. ..and i'll fret that its something up on Gregory's part.

Firstly, I just don't believe he has been that focused on getting back to the game.

When he arrived at training camp in 2018, Marinelli said he was in better shape than anybody on the roster...

The options at starting RDE is already very thin...

- Crawford has troublesome with both hips, and he was always very average as an edge rusher at DE,
- Alden is a recovering alcoholic 4 yr absentee with always one slip strike away from life ban in NFL
- and there's only a raw 5th rd rookie (Bradlee Anae) and JAG ( Armstrong)
- Not really known the matter with Gregory. Goodell delays or a change of heart ?

And these cries for Clowney and Griffin ?
- at age 32, Everson will demand that final deal of his remaining NFL career.
- and Clowney is just a 3 to 4 sack guy. Not a difference maker. If he had Quinn's sack numbers
he'd already have his mega deal.

Most of us are concerned for him. I know JJ was. That’s why he keeps him around. If he plays this year he will help for sure...
