Non-exclusive tag in 2021?

Should the Cowboys use the non-exclusive tag on Dak in 2021? Would anyone give up two 1sts for him, knowing he will likely be an UFA in 2022 otherwise?

I wasn't sure its an option since he got the other tag this year. If it is an option then yes lets see if any GM would give up 2 1st round picks and see what they would actually pay the kid, then decide to match or not.

They should have used it this year.

However, by using the exclusive tag, they show they do want him long term. And I believe MM was in on this also. How could he not be.
Next year will be based on performance. Which I see no reason he will fail. However, will he lead the team further in the playoffs, if they get there.

Because Prescott was given the exclusive tag in 2020, his base salary will be $31.4 million. Due to the CBA rule that a player tagged for a second time will make 120% of that salary, he stands to make $37.69 million in 2021.

The total amount, $69.1 million is a lot of money. So much money, that the Cowboys don’t currently have the room to afford it. LET HIM WALK!

There is no way I would put the exclusive tag on again. Dallas did it for Dak this year and it turned out to bite them. I wouldn't even franchise tag him at all. Put him on the transition tag so he doesn't have a contract to sign and you can match any offer. Poison pills are illegal now and I have full confidence Dallas is willing to pay more than any other team.

All depends on how he performs now. He's betting on himself to not only stay healthy again, but surpass the stats he put up last season to garner more money. Regardless, the other owners and GM's certainly took notice of him turning away
110 million guaranteed. Dak has to play lights out now to get what he wants, which is obviously a good thing for the team and the fans. It's going to be interesting to see how it all works out for Dakota.

100% agree with Silverstar. Now we get to see how he does. Totally fine by me. We get a whole extra year of information to base future decisions. Best case scenario IMHO.

They dont want him long term? Then why did they offer him a 5 year extension?

While I do believe they wanted to sign him long term we do not really know what happened. It is possible they offered him a long term deal they knew he would not sign then claimed that they tried. That is classic passive aggressive behavior and is the opposite of wanting to sign him long term.

They can afford with a long term contract. I'll wait and see how he plays before I say Let him walk.

I said all along the Cowboys should've used the transition tag. There would be no more debate on Dak's market value because the market would've spoken.

Transition tag: Also a one-year, guaranteed contract based on the five-year average cap percentage for the tag at each position, but the transition tag stems from the top 10 -- not top five -- salaries at each position, so it's a bit cheaper. Most importantly, this tag allows players to sign offer sheets with other teams, but the original club has five days to match.

Probably not.

Besides, if Dak plays well enough to command two 1sts, the Cowboys will likely sign him long-term.

We shall see what the cap looks like then
Right now I don’t believe we would have the cap space to tag him without some adjustments

They dont really have salary cap space to franchise him again if Cap is shrinking next year like many are predicting. This is a one-and-done year for Dak. Only way he stays in Dallas is if he wins whole darn thing.

If we learned one thing this off-season its the Jones can't be fooled by stats being padded in games. They may be unusual but they are not stupid. This all comes down to deep runs in playoffs. Its only then they will lock QB up long term.
