The team probably didn’t want to sign him because of what doctors found about his quad and then he stipulated that he’d only keep the signing bonus if that was the injury that put him out.

It makes sense for both sides really.

He's getting 3 million for his time here. I'd like to keep him on, but if the money can be used for a new FA to replace him, that's the smart move.

Before this gets too out of hand, is this due to the reduced roster numbers due to Covid? I can't see this happening with McCoy in a normal year & just wondering if the seemingly harsh action is forced due to current roster management decisions.

I'm sure they wanted the roster spot, but having that specific injury clause makes it look like they knew all along that this might happen and that this would be the result. And as I've already posted, he will still revert back to IR assuming no team claims him which is unlikely.

Due to the clause, I suspect this was discussed during negotiations. If they didn't release him, they would have had to pay at least part of his salary. He will revert to IR and they can monitor him. If he recovers, they can re-sign him, likely at an even lower number.

As far as cap goes, it looks like it frees up $3.25 million in our cap this season.

Well that is at least some relief they did the contract right. And hopefully it means they get some help in here.

But with Poe and Griffin and Aldon basically one year rentals the future of our line is in serious doubt.

what are you talking about, apparently there was a pre existing condition with the quad , and he agreed to it, they also may have negotiated him being released so they could get the roster spot. nothing shady or disrespectful here. and I'm the first one to call Stephen cheap.

lets not pretend this is the first time we’ve ever seen this happen tho. Players get injured they get cut, their production falls off they get cut, and nobody has a problem with that. The second a player outperforms his contract and wants an increase its “he’s selfish, not loyal etc etc” this just shows this game is a business plain and simple

Not much this year but it saves them 3.5 Million in cap room next year.

He was going to count 4.35MM this year (2.5MM Salary, 750K roster bonus, 100K workout bonus).

If he keeps the 3MM signing bonus and it accelerates, they save the 1.35 Million this year.

But 3.5MM would have been guaranteed for the coming years and the team saves that. Sad fact of life, but this move is kind of a non-brainer.

Apparently this has been done before with Heath Miller in Pitt.

Docs will look at a player and tell the decision makers that a certain body part gives them pause after their examination. They let the player know that they will sign said player with this out in this clause pertaining to the given body part.

Surprising I hadn't heard much about it before. I do like it, as long as the player stays on the teams insurance.
