Big Mac passes early test of his leadership

One reason I liked the Mike McCarthy hire earlier this year was I had hope that he would not give in to the 24/7 Barnum and Bailey PR circus that comes rolling out of the Jones boys mouths in rivers of BS. There may be some light breaking that we have a HC who acts like a typical NFL HC and doesn’t make access to “all things Cowboys” an actual priority.

From everything I read the last two days, it was Big Mac who put his foot down about not televising the Blue-White scrimmage like a traditional ps game.

Why is this important? Several reasons:

• With no preseason games, they are clearly working hard on being ready for the season opener. This close to the regular season, this is no preseason game type situation. Unlike most seasons, Big Mac has to get his team ready for several new changes, new lingo with coaches, and several key new players.

• This team is going to look and play differently than recent years and Big Mac doesn’t want that shown yet. By not showing what they’re doing with schemes, personnel packages, etc., they are trying to use those changes as an advantage early on. The best NFL HCs are all usually very close to the vest with what they’re doing. Jerry would probably televise coaches meetings and sell access packages if anyone would let him.

• Big Mac may have sent an important signal to Jerry and the entire organization: He’s a real head coach in the same mold as the bona-fide head coaches of this team’s past: Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells. All HOFers, all with SB rings and real credibility with players, coaches and the rest of the league. All had success being in charge of the locker room and how things were done with players. I’ve always believed Jerry cannot be successful without a strong HC. His history confirms that.

Do I think Jerry is going to let Mike McCarthy run this team the way Jimmy and Parcells were allowed to do? That remains to be seen. The next test for Big Mac may happen when his team starts winning, raising another key crossroads: Will his owner step in (as he’s always done since Jimmy) and start grabbing some spotlight and doing the things that got us the last 25 years of results?

We must hope Big Mac will be allowed to be a HC like all other NFL head coaches are allowed, and like our 3 HOF head coaches were. Our future success may depend on it.

So far, so good.

This is what I expected. Jerry acquiescing football authority to a proven Championship-level head coach. Just like he did with Jimmy, just like he did with Parcells.

He certainly did eventually. But the first year or two he didn’t. Maybe that was because he was so occupied getting his stayjum approved.

I think it’s because Jethro became impatient and begun inserting himself more. He’s not going to stay away if he feels he can help with a player acquisition, etc.

Id expect similar action with Mikey and why having some immediate success will go a long way and keep our Football Idiot at bay.

The Big Tuna who never coached again. If it was a Jerry Jones/TO thing, he would have coached again. Jerry Jones sure as hell didn't stop Bill Parcells from coaching. The man said he was done coaching and he was. No more conspiracy to it than that.

McC was on my short list of 2 and the Skins got the other guy. I wanted a blue collar type HC that looked and talked less like a politician and more like an "ole ball coach". On a team that's all about showbiz, the HC should not be.

The main reason I wanted McC was his history of getting the most out of his players and being able to overcome starters being out. The man started 5 guards in a playoff game and won. If you look at his history in GB, the man handled a hell of a lot of adversity, he didn't have a GM running interference for him.

This team needed a guy with some skins on the wall, needed to believe that when the chips were down, their HC was equal to the opposition if not better. They had lost that with their previous coaching staff. You have to believe that your guy is as smart as the guy across the field.

I started a thread that the Cowboys will win the East and believe that because Booger made the perfect hire. He put the HC with the highest need of redemption with a team needing the same. We used to say that the players play hard for Garrett, and they did, but they will play better for McC.

As far as Booger staying out of it, I have doubt that will happen any more than Crazy Al going quietly into that good night. The difference in a guy like McC and Johnson and Parcells is that he doesn't care if Booger wants some glory.

I agree that Parcells was tired of coaching. That was probably the biggest driver of his decision to step aside. But I also think the TO thing really got under his skin.

I'm sure he didn't like it, but that's clearly not what stopped him from coaching in Dallas. And that was actually the first straw or thing that Jones did that Parcells didn't like, not the last straw.

Parcells most aggravating frustrations were the pre-snap mental penalties that a coach like him hates with a passion because that is preventable but he couldn't stop it and he couldn't bench players like they could in the day because that would harm the team. He realized that it was no longer the coach's game, it had become the players' game.

And he had the lesson of his old buddy Coughlin to drive that home. His players made him change, even took them bowling, and they rewarded him with a ring. But he had to do it their way.
