Your opinion on signing Earl Thomas after week 1

I think it depends on how it goes tomorrow night. I just don’t see them spending the cap space they’ve been creating to rollover next year.

31M is for 2020.

When the recent restructures of some contracts was announced, it included a comment that they want to create space that they will roll-over into 2021.

Dak is not on the books for 2021 and they definitely don't have 37M in cap space for 2021.

Even if the roll all 28M of 2020 cap space into 2021, it will not be enough to cover the 37M without making some other changes.

If he signs a 4 or 5 year contract in 2021 then the 2021 cap hit will be much lower than the 37M franchise tag cap hit.
Good stuff as always, and why I ask,,, thank you

Probably why they’ve been clearing all that cap space over the past week, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him signed after the Rams game.

No. That space if for Dak's deal next year

My question is "will they" not "should they" sign him.

I don't think waiting until after week 1 is an issue.

They could sign him to a Greg Hardy type contract where the majority of the pay is from a weekly bonus.

Example:
Salary: 1M
Per Game Bonus: 500K

That's 9M total but only 1M is guaranteed.

If they waited until after week 1, then 25% of his salary is still guaranteed.
- If the contract was 8M, then 2M would be guaranteed.

I don't think they're interested in ET at this point.

I think that would only change if they lose game 1 with the top problem being the play of the Safeties and even then it still seems unlikely.

Look at the Everson Griffen money. We're not paying full price for Earl Thomas. We might make an offer but it's going to be a low ball offer not even close to 9m. It'll be less than 5m IMO.

If we pay a guy (unlikely), it'll be a trade in the mold of Amari Cooper. A young quality player that's a safe bet.

Don't want him. Lost several steps last year. Get's bullied/washed out of plays like never before. He doesn't care about football. Has baggage. Locker room cancer.

Can he make the team better? Yes.

Will he be a problem in the locker room? Probably.

I say let some other team pay for the headache.

What if he got to Baltimore and realized he wasn’t happy and wished he had taken less and signed in Dallas. Not saying he purposely got cut, just that maybe it affected his behavior. What if he puts on that Star and finds inner peace and balls out again for 3-4 more years? That’s just as plausible as saying he will probably be a locker room problem. Only by taking the chance can you find out which it is and by waiting until after week 1, you get to can him quickly if it’s the later. It’s time to do it and see what happens,

Thankfully week 1 isnt a division game for us so we should know alot about our secondary

if safety mishaps lead to big passing plays then go after him.....if safeties are missing tackles in the open field after catches then you may need him

Yup. They've not shut the door on him like other teams and it would be the trap door contract I've said you sign him to all along that gets you out of it with little damage if he acts up. Post-Week 1 allows us to do exactly that.

I think if they wanted ET he would already be here.

If the Cowboys had brought him in they'd have clearly been bidding against themselves because no one else made him an offer he jumped at (or made him an offer at all). They stood pat thinking everyone else was thinking the same thing and they were right. Good move by the front office. Now they have a second crack at it AND can trap door the hell out of any contract he would sign here.

i think they sign him.
what the hell do we have to lose.

the locker room chemistry....

he’s definitely a good talent but is the juice worth the squeeze....dunno....still no clue what our secondary is going to look like tomorrow

Why would they sign ET after they just brought in Carr. Clearly character is paramount.

Carr could easily be an ET contingency plan. Even if they have some sort of wink-wink deal in place with ET's people, you know that wink-wink would be trashed the moment a more desperate team threw more cash at him and then we'd be left with nothing if Carr also got snatched up.
