Your opinion on signing Earl Thomas after week 1

My question is "will they" not "should they" sign him.


I don't think waiting until after week 1 is an issue.

They could sign him to a Greg Hardy type contract where the majority of the pay is from a weekly bonus.

Example:
Salary: 1M
Per Game Bonus: 500K

That's 9M total but only 1M is guaranteed.

If they waited until after week 1, then 25% of his salary is still guaranteed.
- If the contract was 8M, then 2M would be guaranteed.

I don't think they're interested in ET at this point.

I think that would only change if they lose game 1 with the top problem being the play of the Safeties and even then it still seems unlikely.

Just notice they're activating Carr for this game. To me, this is a screaming help move. As for them NOT being interested in ET, I stand by what I've been saying. They're refusing to KILL the rumor for a reason. I mean one short simple, - we're not interested- statement can make all this ET talk go away.

There are reasons why no one has signed ET - declining skills, poor attitude, etc..

Skip the not guaranteed after week one stuff, he's Earl bleepin' Thomas - this place was ready to sell the farm for him barely a year ago. If he's still all that and a bag of chips he'd already be in a Cowboys uniform. Temper your expectations.

This is where it's at for me too. Plus the team saying they haven't talked to Earl Thomas isn't the same as saying they haven't talked to him or his agent. I think they're going to give it a shot at least and then have Carr as consolation if they miss out. That being said, I wouldn't put it past Jerry to want to have the rumor publicity for publicity's sake because I really think they did that with the Johnny Manziel draft talk when they had zero plans of drafting him even if he fell to them. Lo and behold we didn't with him on the board.

It doesn't matter if he gets paid 1 million by the boys since it gets subtracted by the 10 million the ravens will pay. So we pay 1 million they pay the other 9. All that matters is that MM is in control, has ability to cut him immediately upon him being a cancer. We can use him on the field but not the locker room and it might be too much for a new staff in these weird times.

The total silence from the ET side is what sways my opinion. To me, they must have a something in place or they would be out and about making a little noise and looking for a landing spot. I think they have been told to stay quiet until after week 1 and ET will finally get what he has wanted all along. I think Dallas wanted the negativity surrounding his departure from Baltimore to die down a little and the week 1 salary rules help them as well. I just don’t see how they can pass on this situation if they are serious about winning. If he acts up, you cut him. If he straightens up because he is finally happy, you are much closer to winning a super bowl than you are today. I think it’s getting done and everything is already in place. That’s really the only thing that makes sense and explains the entire situation since he was released.

I’m against signing him- period. Because it’s a typical Jerry fantasy football move. Haven’t we had enough “Jerry moves” for a qtr century? When will it occur to him this isn’t how you build a quality roster? There’s a reason teams aren’t lining up to sign this guy. Jerry loves to be known as the guy who will “take a chance” on a guy, yet here we are 25 years into the longest drought in team history because our GM treats his roster like a fantasy football team. And ET has had two serious leg injuries late in his career. Smdh.

And even if you get some parachute terms in a contract with ET that give you an easy out, why must this organization constantly be the desperate team that’s always willing to roll the dice at the craps table on some body other good orgs won’t touch? Like Greg Hardy or “Purple Drank” McClain as recent examples.

And the Charles Haley argument isn’t even close to this situation. Haley was 28 and in his prime when the Cowboys traded for him. But despite Haley’s weird locker room behavior he was not frequently late to meetings, disregarding coaching, sucker punching teammates, or getting the cops called on him because his wife had a gun to his head.

I say a big no thanks to signing ET. I’m not opposed to bringing in a younger, cheaper veteran player with some upside. BUT the real answer is for this team at Safety is to put some premium draft capital into the position for a change.

that's why i would think after the team comes to a discussion and mutual agreement to take earl on as a player,.. then comes
the terms and conditions of the contract. Agreed amount based off incentives, stipulations and escape clauses.

Dollar amount without an guaranteed roster play. Obvious it would have to be after Sept 1st.
And it's a reason why we haven't heard the Jones be abrupt in denying no interest in Earl like some other NFL teams have.

We are limited there Thompson is not a ball hawk at all,. lacks ball INT capability, questionable instincts and coverage is not his suit.
Reminds me of Byron Jones in that he looks like a man-coverage CB trying to play safety.
I would think you'd want him more in dime packages and situations than as a starter
He is a willing support tackler, good blitzer and of course special teams ace.

- Xavier is just decent enough to get by until we find others better. He has some man skills, awareness and should've displayed better INT hands
than what he's placed out. Dropped touches and chances and he's not always the most physical of tacklers.
Always hearing how he is ready to explode, ..but yet still waiting.

- i considered Brandon Carr pretty much an older version of Daryl Worley. He's depth and a nickel option ..at safety.
Don't want him having to start at outside CB, Very durable player. and i think maybe having the ex-Raven would may have a
calming rapport with earl Thomas may have been another tipbit in bringing in Carr.

I never said it would happen with conviction, I said I wouldn’t be surprised. What else can your crystal ball tell us?

And has sports talk radio even said they were clearing cap space for Earl? If so I haven’t head that, if anything I think I heard them mention possibly doing it for Dak’s contract so I guess I shouldn’t believe that “fill” either.

See what Carr has to say. Played next to him last year. If Carr doesn't see a big problem, signing Earl is a no brainer.

S is probably our largest hole in an otherwise deep team. Fix it.

I feel that a condition of McCarthy's "buy in" was having the ability to cut the player at the first sign of trouble. No guarantees after week one allows him to do just that.

But we will soon see. Thomas may just be so toxic that nobody wants him.
