Give me a top 10 pick and an offseason to properly install a defense

This whole situation which I said from july was a season just being done to keep continuity of the league afloat, has actually positioned Dallas well with the Eagles win tonight. They’d currently have the No. 9 pick

If you’re not a true contender and right now Dallas is not, the best is to get the best draft pick possible and let McCarthy actually have an offseason to assess this team.

Aside from Diggs, there’s no sure answer of who will still be on the team in 2 years on defense. He may be the only member of the secondary here even next year. The DL is all a mismatch of past their prime vets and underachieving draft picks and the LBs have all had injuries rob them of their potential.

Dak is playing great but with LC out for the season, this team is not getting in a shootout with KC or Seattle and winning.

The worst thing that could happen is go 8-8 and win the East. Better to miss the playoffs and have a real offseason to assess the damage. I have confidence McCarthy can get it done. Most DCs should beg to come here. This offense can take 95% of teams deep into the playoffs.

I can’t totally blame Nolan because going from the most basic scheme in the last 25 years to one of the most exotic was always going to be a disaster without practice. But now they’re stuck in between. They don’t blitz but they don’t play soft to keep everything in front either.

I’m at least encouraged they’re trying a new scheme/personnel every week hoping something sticks and not just saying this is what we are.

Most likely just the 1st and 2nd round picks will be the ones to make a difference next year. So given that my top two wishes are a CB opposite Diggs and a LB that can tackle and stay healthy.

Good post, agree 100%. And let’s be honest, one thing that this team really has been good at over the past decade is the NFL DRAFT. Based on their hit rate, I do trust them to make those picks count.

The Eagles won tonight. The NFC East title is going to come down to the two head to head games. Winner goes 8-8 and gets bounced in the first round of the playoffs, loser gets a top 10 draft pick.

Nolan is not the answer.

Don't let him be involved in remaking the defense.
We honestly don’t know what he is. He had no time to change the scheme and the players he does have are missing 5 starters. So it’s hard to know if it’s the scheme or just terrible players like Thompson letting OBJ go by them.

Worley is not an NFL starting CB. Jaylon has been a disaster. DLaw prior to this week was only showing up vs the run. Poe has been a terrible signing (I thought he’d be great). Joe Thomas has played well but he was cut on cutdown day in August and resigned. Lewis isn’t even making plays on the ball like he did last year.

Awuzie, Brown, LVE and Lee won’t make this a top 10 D, but I have to think it will at least be tougher for the offense to score 50

Yes we do. He wasn't very good in Atlanta, no one rushed to hire him after he was let go. Other DCs that are new are having better success. Other defenses have injuries and roster turnover. We aren't talking about a defense that is making a mistake here or there where we could hope that they'll iron some thing out. We are talking about a defense that is off to one of the worst starts in NFL history. They don't do one thing well.

Worst hire of the offseason and will likely cost us another season IMO while we learn that lesson.

What’s the scheme with this personnel that Nolan isn’t doing? He’s trying every front possible (3-4, 4-3, 4-2, 5-2) He’s played man and zone. Run D isn’t scheme, especially when he puts in both Poe and Woods in the middle and flanked by Griffen and Crawford with Smith on the edge. That’s exactly what I would have wanted. The players have to get off blocks.

Yes, this team has no choice but to just tank the season and use it to rebuild the defense. The current core has run its course. They spent 2014-2017 trying to piece together a legit 4-3 defense but it has failed. Some players are still here and some with big contracts, others have left. Either way, it's over...time to start over.

2014 - Lawrence
2015 - Byron, Gregory
2016 - Jaylon, Collins, Brown
2017 - Taco, Awuzie, Lewis

^Fail!!

Dont worry, we are not going to be 8-8 with this defense.

More like 4-12

Maybe we should trade our picks for actual proven players.... this offense is in win now mode. The defense, however is in complete tear down and rebuild mode. We need to make some moves. I’m not sure what moves we need to make, I need to observe around the league a bit more, but something more needs to be done other than just “draft” because we’ll have guys like Diggs, who are showing flashes, but still struggling overall. We’d be asking a lot for first-third round rookies to start on defense and be superstars.

As someone said earlier, it starts in the trenches. If your O-Line and D-line suck, your team will suck. We need another LB and DE for sure. Then a safety. Those should be our top 3 picks. Everything after that can be CB, DT, and probably another LB or Safety. Then maybe we can pick up some UDFA O-line men. Then we’ll need a new kicker and punter but we don’t have to spend high draft picks on those.

we shall be set then, barring injury (oh and get the main 3 coaching staff out of here as well).

Mike Nolan isn't the problem. Mike Nolan needs time to get this right and it might not be this season. He has inherited a DEF that was very poor of which a couple of players are portrayed as stars of the NFL but are anything but. The McCoy injury was significant and the other injuries have not helped. The Cowboys DEF has been poor for years. What we need is someone to come in and rebuild it for the 21st Century with multiple fronts and looks. Please lets not go down the road of just returning to a plain 4-3 scheme which other teams will exploit over time. Let us be able to dictate what we want to do.

If we can split the series with the Eagles, 8 wins should give us the division. Easy to say but if we can be 4-5 at the bye, we would need another 4 wins from last 7. That won't be easy.

Yes... good points but you forgot one thing.

That’s assuming Jerrah and Mini-JJ will allow him to do so.
We know the answer to that don’t we?

Last week ole Jerrah implied that Dak cost us the game, something I’m sure he’ll do again this week.

As for mini-JJ he came out and shut the door saying this team doesn’t need DB’s

So when you have the FO assessing the talent on this team rather than the guy or guys that should be. It says it all.

As good as he seems to be, did we really need a CeeDee Lamb?

Forget the bs about taking the best player available

You take the best player available to address your NEEDS.

However, with the Cowturds media hype and Jerrah wanting his team to be on everyone’s lips. You go for the hype, the media speculation about what if.

it’s all about the marketing.

This is where I'm leaning ........maybe not trade but certainly a proven player. We're not hearing now but there's a strong possibility the Broncos will ask Von Miller to take a pay cut or release him after the season based on the current deal. He only has a year left ( 2021 ) with no guaranteed money but they save $18M.

This D is screaming leadership.....a high-level player you can count on showing up EVERY GAME ( like LVE, Lee, DWare ). I agree we probably spend our entire draft on the D but rookies are just that, rookies.

So a rookie DE in Chiasson would have made the difference in the season?

Great post. People want to get rid of Nolan already and they are crazy. Give this staff a couple years to get their guys and see what they can do.

The Coverage these guys are playing is really "exotic".

I take the basic 25 year old scheme any day over this nonsense
