FRISCO, Texas – The timeline is coming into clearer focus for Dak Prescott's return to action.

Prescott was discharged from the hospital on Monday after undergoing successful surgery on his fractured ankle. During a Tuesday morning interview on 105.3 FM The Fan in Dallas, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones was asked if he had an idea of when the star quarterback would be able to return to the field.

"If you look ahead, he should be ready to go for our spring work – the latter part of the spring work," Jones said. "But knowing Dak – and that's a big part of this thing – knowing Dak and his makeup, he'll be back out there soon."
Jones isn't the first person to acknowledge the role that Prescott's own drive will play in this process. On Monday night, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said he thought Prescott would "challenge any timeline" the team's medical staff puts in front of him.

Doesnt sound like Jerry is walking away from Dak considering hes a free agent next season and Jerry is talking about camp.

It stands to reason that the team will have to tag him again during his recovery, as the deadline to use the franchise tag typically comes before the start of the new league year.

From there, it'll be interesting to see if the sides can come to terms on a long-term agreement, or whether Prescott might once again have to prove himself on a one-year contract.

Regardless of how it plays out, Jones was adamant that Prescott's injury doesn't change the organization's conviction to keep him as its starting quarterback. As has been the case for a while now, Jones said it's simply about making the numbers work.

"Dak is deserving of anything you want to put on a piece of paper, relatively speaking," he said. "He's deserving of that, and he's, if you evaluate what he can do to help us win championships, you can see that it's there. Plus, he's a leader at the premier leader spot. We've got make it work."

Wishful thinking. Gordon Hayward came back to the Celtics and was never the same player after suffering similar injury.

that’s exactly what I just wrote in another post....this is an 8-12 month recovery for him to comeback and look even 75% of what he was. Won’t see pre injury dak form until 2022 IMO

Basketball and football are not the same sport. Running isn't a huge part of Dak's game,he barely even drops back from the center. As long as he still has strength in his lower areas I don't think it will massively impact him.

and yet few cases are exactly the same. Dak will go through recovery and rehab and we will see. Claiming one person situation is the exact same as another there fore the results are the same is just not true. I don't base anything based on 1 persons experience vs another.

Assuming Covid isn't a problem...I would bet Dak ends up having to rehab on his own...with the way things have been going. Hope he can be dedicated enough to see this through on his own...I have my doubts.

Don't they need Dak to have done some of the rehab to get an idea of what kind of progress he'll be able to make? It seems really early to be able to make time predictions for his recovery.

But...but...I've read here that Dak will be gone by May.

If anything, Jerry wants him more now. He loves to be the guy who takes the chance on injured players. He will up his offer to Dak on the first day after the season ends.

I'm sure there are many Jerry wanna be who would have gotten rid of Dak before the injury and while they are entitled to opinions, their opinions have no bearing on what the team does or doesn't do.

I hope so but I dont see it with that bad of injury. I'll be suprised if he's ready to play by october-november next year.

Didnt he miss like a year and a half almost 2 years?

After Prescott was carted off the field on Sunday, former defensive end Connor Barwin took to Twitter to offer the QB some words of encouragement. Barwin suffered a similar injury in 2010 to the same right ankle, and his recovery should encourage Cowboys fans across the country.

Barwin fractured his ankle early on in the 2010 season. He missed the remainder of the year, but he returned for the start of the 2011 campaign fully healthy. In fact, he even broke out for 11.5 sacks in his first season back. Four years after the injury, Barwin recorded 14.5 sacks and made his first Pro Bowl. The DE went on to play eight fruitful seasons after snapping his ankle.

More recently, Gordon Hayward suffered the same injury as Prescott in 2017. He went up for a rebound and landed awkwardly on his ankle, causing it to turn 90 degrees to the side. It took Hayward longer than Barwin to return to his old self, but he finished the 2020 season averaging 17.5 points per game on a career-high 50% shooting.

Cowboys fans should expect a recovery time similar to Hayward’s. He took over a year to find hit footing and return to the player he was pre-injury, and Prescott should follow the same arc.

The doctor said 4-6 months. I'll go with that over speculation of how similar Dak's injury is to some other athlete.

People were making Alex Smith comparisons yesterday. Alex Smith spent months in the hospital with a life-threatening infection, almost lost his leg, and needed 17 surgeries to put it back together.

Dak had one surgery and went home the next day.

True and Dak was treated by one of the best in the business in Dr. Eugene Curry. Like you I respect the view of doctor, having said that everything I have seen and read indicate this is a tough and painful rehab, so Dak has a lot of work in front of him once he is able to being rehab.
