I got off along time ago. We have a GM that would have drafted Ryan Leaf over Manning who just happens to be great at marketing...and folks, he does a great job of selling his team in August as really talented...but the results year in, year out say different...

This is not a talented team. We have a lot of weaknesses and there is no quick fix...no matter who says it. This team needs to fire Carol and the special team's coach ASAP.

Have to first determine where McClay ends and Jones begins.
This.

Parcells once said that Jerry was fine to work
for and that you just had “to convince him” if you had a disagreement over an organizational issue. This comment, at the time, spoke volumes to me about what it must be like interacting with Jerry Jones. Here you have a two-time SB champion, with decades of professional football experience, that has taken two franchises to the SB and has consistently built winners everywhere he went having to convince an owner with no professional football experience prior to buying the team, who desperately wants clout and credit as a GM after Johnson left, what’s the best thing to do when it comes to the teams needs.

It’s impossible to determine anything definitive about Will McClay because Jerry is putting his nose into the mix. Remember the “special teams” draft? That was a thing. Jerry is not going to sit on the sidelines in any conversation.

I think the top of the roster is fine..

What bothers me is how safe we are and how sold they are on a roster that has never won anything ever.

Dallas needs to stop being so “smart” and make some big moves.

The smart thing is to keep McCarthy.

The smart thing is to stick with Dak.

The smart thing is just to keep telling yourself that it was injuries that caused this season.

Dallas will do the smart thing and they will continue to play a 50/50 brand of football that gives you the belief they are so close.

We don’t have difference makers on this team.

I guess we can say the bloom is off the rose with him. Once viewed as a genius but wow the recent record is bad. FAs and draft. I am too lazy to post them so take a look at the recent player moves. It’s bad. I am off the McClay bandwagon.

Thoughts?

I didn't know McClay had a bandwagon. The problem is he does not have decision-making authority, so how much is he really to blame?

I like McClay and am happy he is around.

To me its much better than the days when Jerry would fly by himself or listen to dudes like Larry Lacewell.

Are the results fully there on the field? No but I cant hang that on McClay.

He isnt the absolute best, but no one is perfect, and someone in his spot would have quite a but to overcome.

Yeah. For all we know, McClay may be the one voice of sanity keeping things from really derailing. Granted, he’s not above mistakes (he’s human)and he needs to answer for the disastrous FA moves we made this past off season but it’s hard to know, as nightrain pointed out, where Jerry begins and McClay ends.

Will McClay and free agency.

The free agent philosophy is driven by Stephen Jones now.

The team is far less impacted from a cap perspective by failing on a few bargain basement short term contracts like Griffen/Poe/Worley than by failing on 1 mega-contract.

The Brandon Carr contract in 2012 was 5 years, 50M. That would is equivalent to about 5 years, 85M in 2020.

The problem is the Cowboys have done really good/great work drafting offensive guys, but less so (by a mile) on defense. The most consistently good defensive players (IMO) have been Byron Jones and DLaw (that's right, DLaw is in the top 2, which lets you know what I think of the other guys).

Could only mask ownership for so long. McClay, Romo, Aikman, ect.

The problem of late has been those 2nd and 3rd rounders. Way too many risky picks and misses.

I think when Stephen Jones is your boss and Jerry over him... you gots hands tied behind your back.

But if McClay was grading out with A and B offseason for years before this failure, you also have to wonder if he deferred to the coaches too much in the evaluations. Clinton-Dix was a McCarthy guy who failed miserably. Poe and McCoy were the big fatties that fit Nolan's defense.

I don't think we really have the answer to who rang the doorbell with this particular bag of flaming poo.

Right, but you also get what you pay for.

Carr is the last one they signed of that nature. NINE years ago.

I'm guessing Jones is attempting to copy the Pittsburgh model, where they draft well and retain the key pieces. Never be a player in FA.

Yeah sure. Problem there is they dont draft as well as Pittsburgh, and those teams are coached and taught well.

Dont get me started on culture.

IMO they cant afford to ignore second contract types in UFA, but they want to pretend that they draft better than they actually do.

The big problem on the team now is their own that were signed and paid to lead and perform, and they simply arent. They were happy enough to get paid because that's all it's about for them.

It's amazing how some players don't work out in Dallas, but when they move on they have productive careers with other teams.

I think Dallas is drafting quality NFL players. But their potential is not being maximized in Dallas.

Football outsiders studied 10 years of NFL drafts and concluded that Dallas was the 3rd best team at drafting. I believe Kansas City and Seattle were the only teams ahead of them.

When taken in a vacuum, most believe Dallas doesn't draft well. But when comparing Dallas to the other 31 teams, Dallas drafts very well.

I firmly believe we, as fans, know very little when it comes to the details.
We just make assumptions and ride, or die with them.
We are what we are.

And Brandon Carr was the last time they went into FA desperate for a starter and willing to firehose money at one. Its probably also a big reason we don't do that anymore.

The Ravens have a tremendous front office. They would have found a way to build a team around Zeke. Can you imagine Zeke and LJ in the same backfield? :omg:

Agreed.. Ravens has pretty much adopted take kids from the SEC and known player makers from other big time conferences approach. Few and between picks from schools like Tulsa, Kansas and Boise State searching for diamond in the roughs in the Early rounds.

Commanders are mimicking the same on defense, and now look to take the NFC East this year as a result.
