Bingo.Summary:
The results have not been perfect, but somehow Will McClay and Stephen Jones have kept crazy Jerry input on the draft to a minimum in the time since McClay was promoted to the top talent evaluator.
Unfortunately, in place of excessive Jerry input, they allowed to much crazy Marinelli input.
Look, doesn't matter what inputs and grades McClay gives to a player if the drafting philosophy of the GM / Owner isn't set.
Jerry, IMO, is a very 2 dimensional thinker. He seems to want to rebuild the 90's Cowboys, that is all he kinda knows. He reaches to produce a big offensive line, and the triplets, why else pay Zeke crazy money ? He keeps looking for a new Novack, La Fluer, Witten, etc. He keeps looking for the next Emmitt, he wants another Irvin, mainly through FA, Joey Galloway, Roy Williams, Amari.
It isn't going to happen. We need some stability and a coach who can build a team out. Garrett couldn't do it. No idea if McCarthy can.
But who even knows how good out drafts are when the the GM is so bad, and the coaching sucks ?!!?!?!
How much does he have to do with FAs anyway? The draft record still looks pretty good to me. Free agents not so much, but some of that could be on having a limited free agent budget to work with.
They weren't any good in marinelli's scheme either.Keep in mind that our players were drafted to fit into Marinelli and Richard’s system of defense. They won’t be a good fit in different systems being run. Nolan’s defense is very different than Marinelli’s especially the responsibilities along the DL. Not defending McClay but he was looking for guys with specific skill sets that he would never consider for Nolan.
you hang around the Jones for a while you end up one of them
The mindless horde...I firmly believe we, as fans, know very little when it comes to the details.
We just make assumptions and ride, or die with them.
We are what we are.
I wondered that too.How much does he have to do with FAs anyway?
Way to much emphasis on that. He has the final say, but it's really giving his blessings to the decision that has already been made.Remember they said Jerry had final say on the CeeDee Lamb pick, scary stuff.
Players in the NFL get old quick. It's not McClay's fault that Jerry decided to pay the wrong players and hire the wrong coaches.I guess we can say the bloom is off the rose with him. Once viewed as a genius but wow the recent record is bad. FAs and draft. I am too lazy to post them so take a look at the recent player moves. It’s bad. I am off the McClay bandwagon.
Thoughts?
Of course you are. McClay is one of the best in the entire NFL in finding players but he’s not an owner who creates the culture of the organization. Very naive thread you created.I guess we can say the bloom is off the rose with him. Once viewed as a genius but wow the recent record is bad. FAs and draft. Exactly, he needs to let a GM make that decision while he does Owner stuff.Way to much emphasis on that. He has the final say, but it's really giving his blessings to the decision that has already been made.
I'm not sure I'd even go that far. I think it's more like "as long as he doesn't openly object".Way to much emphasis on that. He has the final say, but it's really giving his blessings to the decision that has already been made.
I think it’s fair to criticize McClay at this point for sure. But I would also say it’s fair to remember that McClay does not select a single player. He provides Jerry with extensive research and recommendations but he doesn’t draft.I guess we can say the bloom is off the rose with him. Once viewed as a genius but wow the recent record is bad. I agree but too many players come into Dallas and don’t perform. I understand it’s the culture but at some level the players are responsible.I think it’s fair to criticize McClay at this point for sure. I like to use a pool game analogy. McClay takes the pool balls and “racks them up” for Jerry, then hands him the pool cue.
Maybe McClay’s scouting has dropped off, but he never makes a single decision regarding players- draft choices or free agents. His role is to provide choices in the draft and free agency so Jerry can play big shot and make the actual “war room” decisions in the moment.
Who’s more responsible? The guy at the top.
