I'd do it in a heartbeat. None of the first round DBs excite me this year. This would allow us to go with Sewell and have a franchise OT for the next 10+ years.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily count on Baker making our need for a starting corner go away, but we could hope.

One man's garbage ...

I agree that it's buyer beware, but if he's cheap, then you can throw him out if he proves to be garbage or trouble.

True enough but I'm seeing several shaky things that don't bode well for a successful signing. Just saying . . .

This team rolled out with Awuzie as the 1. Baker is at least equal to if not better . So it’s not far fetched

Only one way I'd sign him. If he can convince me(the org, obviously) that his head is on straight.

Not sure he can play. Lacks the "instant acceleration to recover if beaten initially."

Points toward a possible lack of burst. However, in other parts of his scouting report it talks about his "quickness to close". Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

His average size and speed is worrisome. But hey, if he checks OK in the attitude box, sure.

My opinion is this allows us to get a first round pick on a rookie deal for three more years.

Meaning we don’t have to overpay in FA

Nor spend a first in the draft

Not necessarily.

@xwalker just posted stats of 3rd year Chido compared to rookie Baker. Similar stats

I get the feeling that Fisher will report that the Cowboys might be interested anytime a player that makes the news is available...
That's what he and the many social media people do in sports.

They tweet out random speculations to gain followers knowing that most people will forget most of the wrong predictions.

Schefter even recently stated on the same day that Rush and Gilbert were both starting for the Cowboys against the Steelers.

I think my favorite was when Elliott's case ruling was about to be announced and a few twitter wannabes tweeted out, "My sources tell me he won and they are just working on the paperwork." only to be discredited minutes later.

Why not? Hopefully this experience has taught him a valuable lesson and he doesn't take it for granted.

No. Based off his rookie year, Baker is not equal to Awuzie at his worst. However, he was a rookie and thus might improve exponentially.

Sadly, that approach works.

Fisher did try for many years to be a somewhat of a regular reporter but he saw his career become mediocre while he watched Skip Bayless move on to making millions per year.

Of course. However, I'm looking at physical skillset, the biggie when evaluating a player as far as pro success. Baker isn't real fast, and may lack burst. That's more important than draft status and rookie stats.

However, I have no problem picking him up and kicking the tires to see if he's a problem child.

If that's the case, it could easily become a negative thing, rather than something positive. It seems a risky proposition, at best.
When a player is cut, I'm pretty sure his contract doesn't follow him.

Well, I think he's been called dumb, so he might be a slow learner. There were mentions of character concerns before he was drafted, but the only thing I could find is that he made a business decision to skip Georgia's bowl game before he was drafted.

Then, there's this robbery. If nothing else, he put himself in a bad situation. But just because the charges were dropped doesn't mean that he didn't do it. There seems to be evidence that he and Dunbar tried to pay off their accusers (and that the accusers tried to get more). He could have done that because he just wanted it to go away or because he's guilty.

I also read he was considered to be a good teammate, but then I just read this:

“There was a battle in our building on whether we were going to take DeAndre or not,” a source privy to the Giants’ draft thinking told The Post, “because the story was he had to have his a– kicked every day to work hard at Georgia — to even go to practice. We knew that and we still drafted him, and from Day 1 it was like taking a guy in the first round that you had to teach nearly everything to.”

Good points, all. He could easily become a lucky pickup or one that carries risk if it's handled improperly. With our FO involved, take your pick.

That's a good point, if true. Hopefully, it is. ;)
There are some strange clauses in NFL contracts, for sure. It would seem logical that the original team is responsible for guaranteed salary and signing bonus. However, there was the case the last year or so where a player's salary was paid by the signing team, but only up to the amount agreed to by 2nd team.

It'll be strictly up to the FO. I'm unsure as to what they'd be inclined to do. It should be interesting to see what develops.
